The ReSound Savi 4 61-DRW in review

The purchase of a hearing aid should be well thought out, as it comes with a significant price, and one wants to enjoy it for many years. Therefore, we will look at various parameters and provide you with the results of our product tests. This report is about the Savi 4 61-DRW from ReSound. It is a small, hardly noticeable hearing aid from the lower mid-range, suitable for mild, moderate, and severe hearing needs. It is worn behind the ear. By placing the speaker directly in the ear canal, it achieves quite good acoustic sound properties right from the start.

Savi by ReSound – the entry-level model for those who want to rely on proven hearing technology without stretching the budget.

Hearing comfort

Our first test category is auditory comfort. We could also say sound comfort, because that’s what it’s mainly about. Does the hearing aid sound very technical or pleasantly natural? Are too many background noises amplified, or do they stay well in the background? In this device from ReSound, solid comfort programming is possible through the hearing care professional. The noise suppression is a very traditional feature that filters out all monotonous, uniform sounds from the environment and reduces their loudness. In the Savi 4 61-DRW, we are not dealing with the most powerful variant, but in everyday life, the noise suppression should be sufficient.

Wind noise can sometimes become a problem outdoors. Therefore, a moderate wind noise management feature is integrated here. The impulse noise management is relatively simple; it dampens short loud sounds a bit, which is acceptable. The Savi 4 61-DRW has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it. During our tests, we also examine spatial hearing. While adaptive microphones are integrated, the wireless networking between both ears is lacking, and thus true 3D hearing cannot be reconstructed. Nevertheless, one can manage well. With a little practice, directional hearing can be retrained.

Strategies based on artificial intelligence are not yet employed in this hearing aid from ReSound.

With ReSound's Binaural Directionality III, your hearing aids automatically adjust to complex listening situations – for better speech understanding, even in noisy environments. You hear what is important while staying aware of your surroundings.

Operation & connectivity

Although hearing aids are now very intelligent, they still cannot read the thoughts of the hearing aid wearer. Therefore, the automation sometimes reaches its limits. Individual adjustment options can be really useful, so let's briefly look at the options available with the Savi 4 61-DRW: For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume up or down, there is a button on the device. Further programs for special listening situations can also be selected through it. A remote control is available for the Savi 4 61-DRW. It's quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume option as well as various listening programs.

Voice commands are a fairly new way of controlling hearing aids. However, this feature is not yet available in this model. That's not a big deal – the main thing is that you can hear well. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With it, you could change the function with a short tap on your ear. But this is not yet available in the Savi 4 61-DRW.

In our opinion, an app is better than a remote control, as everyone probably has a smartphone in their pocket. The app for the Savi 4 61-DRW is really good; it has a lot of clever features that make hearing in difficult situations much easier. It is quite complex, but you can quickly get the hang of it. You can practice in demo mode. There are also a few surprising additional tools – have fun discovering them! For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would not be bad. The device at hand meets our wish and comes with a 2.4 GHz radio module. This allows you to send phone calls and sounds directly from your smartphone to the hearing aids.

Whether entry-level or premium model: ReSound equips all hearing aids with advanced connectivity – including LE Audio, Auracast, and direct streaming for compatible devices.

Simplicity & security

How does one manage with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only if such a device works easily and uncomplicated can one become accustomed to it. The automatic situation recognition is supposed to make listening easier. However, the Savi 4 61-DRW does not handle changing or difficult acoustic environments very well, as it lacks some adaptive algorithms. Additionally, one should always have a few extra hearing programs set up for this device. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automated acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely perceptible steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I just need to do nothing more than wear my hearing aids regularly.

We regret that the Savi 4 61-DRW does not have a rechargeable battery but operates with hearing aid batteries size 312. This is not a major issue, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a longer time on a single battery.

The hearing aid has been classified in protection class IP 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water cannot easily damage the hearing aid either. Thus, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

This model is available with both a rechargeable battery and a disposable battery. What you should consider when making your decision is discussed in our article Battery or Rechargeable? A Guide for Hearing Aid Users

Extras

Before we come to the end, let’s take a look at the extras: Are you one of those suffering from tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the Savi 4 61-DRW. Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It's nothing more than a distraction technique, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and doesn’t annoy anymore. This is a simple yet effective tool and earns extra points from us.

A very good additional benefit is provided by the remote support offer. Through the app, you can contact your audiologist and describe your hearing problem. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with limited time or a long commute, this is a great service.

If ReSound had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individualized health tracking could even be possible. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost in the overall assessment of the Savi 4 61-DRW. The device from ReSound focuses on the essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.

The new ReSound is equipped with interchangeable microphone filters that you can quickly and easily replace yourself – for consistently clear sound and less maintenance effort.
