The Insio 1 IX CIC is a small, slim hearing aid from the affordable segment. We achieve clear sound transmission through the well-suited wearing position in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

Hearing aids are not only meant to bring speech to the ear but also to sound pleasant. So let's first look at the comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? Are they dampened or transmitted unchanged? Is the hearing aid suitable for an active everyday life? Here with this test device, we found only limited options for comfort modification. Like in every hearing aid, there is typical noise cancellation included. It is designed to reduce uniform, noisy ambient sounds to the extent that they no longer dominate. The Insio 1 IX CIC only offers a minimal basic reduction. A certain tolerance for noise should be expected from the hearing aid user here.

For active outdoor enthusiasts, we always find wind noise management useful. This device does have it, but it is not very powerful. It cannot be adjusted individually either. An impulse sound filter is also said to be implemented. However, it only dampens short, rattling noises very minimally, so it is not really helpful. The number of equalizer bands is very important for adapting to hearing needs. The CIC only provides 8 and does not allow for many fine-tuning options in the long term. The special design of the Insio 1 IX CIC proves to be advantageous when it comes to spatial hearing. The microphones are located deep in the ear canal, and that is exactly where sound reaches normal hearing individuals. Therefore, spatial hearing does not need to be artificially recreated but occurs naturally.

An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet implemented in this Signia model.

Operation & connectivity

Although hearing aids are now very intelligent, they still cannot read the thoughts of the hearing aid wearer. Therefore, the automatic features sometimes reach their limits. Individual adjustment options can be really useful, so let's briefly look at the options available with the Insio 1 IX CIC: Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Insio 1 IX as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button, and it can also be deactivated if desired. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it's one of the most convenient ways to turn the hearing aid up or down or switch to another hearing program. No one notices; there is no need to reach for the ear.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Signia unfortunately cannot yet. That would be practical when fingers aren't as nimble anymore or simply if one likes smart gadgets. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple fingertip on this Signia model, as specific sensors in the housing would have been needed for that.

We find the app for the Insio 1 IX CIC somewhat sparse. It is best to check out the demo version before purchasing the hearing aid to see if it meets your needs. But we don't want to complain; the app is definitely useful. The smartphone cannot be connected to the hearing aid, as unfortunately, the necessary equipment with a radio antenna is missing.

Now, let's briefly discuss everyday usability. Is the Insio 1 IX CIC user-friendly and easy to handle? Does it have water protection? Here are our findings: When it comes to ease of hearing, we don't make compromises. We expect the hearing aid to function fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press any buttons. With the Insio 1 IX CIC, we are somewhat disappointed. Only basic situations are recognized automatically. This means we cannot really do without manual operation options. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not need to be immediately set to maximum. You can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target.

The Insio 1 IX CIC is not rechargeable. It continues to get its energy from size 10 disposable batteries, which need to be changed every few days.

We had a carefree everyday experience in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We walked through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands – no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only pertains to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

But before we come to the end, we want to know if there are any additional functions: Manufacturers often implement a tinnitus program in their hearing aids to alleviate the annoying ringing a little. However, Signia has foregone this in this model. This is unfortunate, as it would be a real added benefit for many people.

In mobile times like these, a remote maintenance service via an app would be very helpful. This would allow one to conveniently create a new hearing aid programming from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Insio 1 IX CIC. Therefore, for any changes, one still has to visit the specialist store.

Many hearing aids today still come with some health features. However, since the Insio 1 IX CIC does not have special sensors for this, we cannot present any particularities here. The functionality of the Insio 1 IX CIC is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alarm or Siri connections do offer significant added value but are not relevant for good hearing balance.
