The Signia Intuis M 4.0 HdO in review

Die Technik dieser Gerätefamilie ist bereits überholt. Wir haben die Bewertung deshalb mit einem Abschlag in der Gesamtnote versehen. Zur neuesten Chiptechnik des Herstellers geht es hier entlang: Audio Service G8

Let's take another look at an earlier widely used hearing aid for mild to profound hearing losses: This model is called Intuis M 4.0 BTE and comes from the company Signia. It is worn behind the ear, and it is a fairly small hearing aid. The Intuis M 4.0 BTE is an entry-level model. Let's see if the pricing is justified.

Hearing comfort

In our test, we usually start with the analysis of comfort features. A comfortable sound is marked by a mix of speech and ambient noises that is realistic and as pleasant as possible. Various electronic tools take care of all the sounds. With the Intuis M 4.0 HdO, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. One of the noise tools is noise suppression, which is supposed to reduce sounds like traffic noise, refrigerator humming, or computer fan noise. Here, there is only a minimal base reduction. Users of hearing aids should have a certain noise tolerance in this regard.

Points are deducted for the lack of impulse noise suppression. This usually dampens short, clattering noises. However, those who choose this hearing aid should not let that disturb them. Users of the Intuis M 4.0 HdO, however, will have to cope with the wind sweeping across the microphones. There is no wind noise reduction here. Those wishing for good 3D hearing will be disappointed. The right and left hearing aids do not synchronize; the microphones have no additional functions. As a result, it is already difficult to reliably locate sound sources through hearing. We also find the low number of frequency channels less than optimal. The device has only 6 of them, allowing little room for maneuver during initial programming as well as longer-term adjustments, and some sound quality sacrifices are likely to be accepted.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but that is not the case with this device yet.

Operation & connectivity

Although hearing aids are now very intelligent, they still cannot read the thoughts of the hearing aid wearer. Therefore, the automation sometimes reaches its limits. Individual adjustment options can be really useful, so let's briefly look at the options available with the Intuis M 4.0 behind-the-ear (HdO) model: Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Intuis M 4.0. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it's one of the most convenient ways to adjust the volume of the hearing aid or switch to another hearing program. Nobody notices it; reaching for the ear is not necessary.

In our testing, we did not find any voice control options. This feature isn't strictly necessary, but it would have pleased us nonetheless. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tapping control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this possibility is not available in this Signia device.

Signia offers an appropriate app for easier operation. However, it is not particularly well-equipped and hardly goes beyond basic functions like volume control and hearing programs. Unfortunately, we have to do without a streaming function here and continue to hold the smartphone normally to the ear.

Simplicity & security

Our analysis also addresses the everyday practicality of hearing aids. This includes robustness, but also special comfort features that aim to make daily use as simple as possible. When it comes to ease of hearing, we do not make compromises. We expect the hearing aid to function fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press any buttons. We are somewhat disappointed with the Intuis M 4.0 BTE. Only basic situations are recognized automatically. This means that we cannot really do without manual control options. We do give it a big plus for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This significantly eases the adjustment to the new sound.

The Intuis M 4.0 BTE gets its power from small disposable batteries that need to be replaced every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered at least for individuals with motor difficulties. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.

The hearing aid has been classified in IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. This makes it well-equipped for outdoor activities, where it might get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in sea water can change the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Extras

We are almost at the end, but maybe this device has a few gifts in the form of extra features? Let's take a look: We would have liked to discover a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn't one.

A clever tool is the integrated remote servicing feature. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote servicing feature is absolutely appropriate. Anyone who needs a new programming of their hearing aids can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Via a cloud service, the professional can then send a custom setting as a data package to the app. From there, it will be uploaded to the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. That definitely deserves extra points in our test.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately don't have in the Intuis M 4.0 HdO. The functionality of the Intuis M 4.0 HdO is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alarms or Siri links offer significant value but are not relevant for good hearing balance.
