Signia offers the Pure 1 X 312, a small, hardly visible hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. It is a hearing aid from the more affordable category and is suitable for mild to severe hearing loss. The cleverly chosen placement of the speaker in the ear canal ensures that sound reaches the eardrum without any losses.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of sounds does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? Here with this test device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise cancellation here. It is supposed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point that they no longer stand out. The Pure 1 X 312 has only a minimal basic reduction. A certain tolerance for noise should be expected from the hearing aid user here.

However, users of the Pure 1 X 312 must deal with the wind blowing over the microphones. There is no wind noise reduction here. A filter for rattling, popping noises is not present – unfortunately, no points for that. With 8 frequency bands, we are not entirely satisfied with the 312, but it should suffice for uncomplicated hearing curves. The sound is probably not very natural. We are far from experiencing 3D surround sound here. Only the switchable forward focus offers some auditory support in social situations.

An additional tool to improve hearing comfort can be found in the Signia app. There, preferences from thousands of other hearing aid users are utilized through artificial intelligence to generate a tailored setting for a specific hearing situation.

Operation & connectivity

How can one fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what accessibility options are available with the Pure 1 X 312. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through it. A remote control is available for the Pure 1 X 312. It is quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume option as well as different hearing programs.

In the test, we did not find any option for voice control. This feature is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which in turn triggers a specific function. However, this possibility is not available in this Signia device.

As is common today, we also find a smartphone app for the Pure 1 X 312. This app contains solid basic functions and adds a few extra goodies. The Pure 1 X comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normal hearing individuals. We think this is good and are happy to give points.

Simplicity & security

Of course, we are also interested in how quickly one can get used to the Pure 1 X 312 and how easy daily usage is. When it comes to adapting to changing listening situations, we have to rely on manual options with the Pure 1 X 312. An automatic situation recognition would have definitely made life easier, but it is not available here. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don’t have to do anything other than regularly wear my hearing aids.

The Pure 1 X 312 is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from disposable 312 batteries, which need to be changed every few days.

We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and find the protection class IP 68 in the datasheet. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Extras

Finally, let's take a quick look at whether there are any extras: For example, a tinnitus option would be interesting. Unfortunately, we did not discover any way to alleviate tinnitus in the Pure 1 X 312.

The option for remote adjustment is very useful. It comes in handy whenever you want to change just a small setting on the hearing aid without having to go to the audiologist. Instead, you make contact through the app, and the hearing professional sends a customized data package back the same way.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Pure 1 X 312. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but those are not available in the Pure 1 X 312. Other hearing aids may offer features like language translation or fall alerts, but here we stick to the usual range of functions.
