The Signia Pure 5 AX Charge&Go in review

Aufgrund der technischen Neuerungen und der Einführung des Signia IX-Modells haben wir die Gesamtnote dieses Hörgeräts reduziert.

Here we are looking at a hearing aid in a high-quality range that is worn behind the ear. It is called Pure 5 AX Charge&Go and comes from the manufacturer Signia. It can be used by anyone with both mild and more severe hearing needs who desires a discreet hearing aid. Due to the direct alignment of the speaker in the ear canal, it has very good sound properties.

What’s new in the latest generation of technology? Read our article on the Signia AX technology to find out which features have been improved and added.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of sounds does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here, in this test device, the manufacturer provides customers with comprehensive sound management. As with all hearing aids, we also find typical noise reduction here. It aims to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to the point where they are no longer prominent. For the Pure 5 AX Charge&Go, the manufacturer has put in effort and incorporated efficient noise reduction.

The Pure 5 AX Charge&Go impresses us with its wind noise reduction and offers good performance in that aspect. Impulsive sounds occur quite often in daily life. There’s the dishwasher that needs to be unloaded or the keychain being placed on the table. The Pure 5 AX Charge&Go features strong impulse sound management that makes these sounds bearable. Those who want a hearing aid with plenty of flexibility will find the Pure 5 AX Charge&Go to be a great choice. It has 16 frequency channels and thus offers excellent adjustment options. The sound can be modified according to individual preferences, even after several years. Spatial hearing functions very reliably. Directional hearing is supported, and the spatial impression is good.

For challenging hearing situations, Signia has a special strategy: In the app, you will find an assistance function that allows for spontaneous and precise changes based on artificial intelligence. It’s like an intelligent immediate help in case you’re not near your audiologist.

The wind noise manager detects air turbulence at the hearing aid microphones and reduces the resulting noise background. However, since the intensity and direction of the air currents are constantly changing, the device always needs a moment for processing.

Operation & connectivity

Most functions of this Signia model are activated automatically. However, it can be very useful to have the option to expand the functionality a bit more. In our testing, we discovered what options are available. The simplest control option is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This model has one as well. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for a gradual adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or hobbies? These can also be activated via the button. If you want to keep everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. A discreet way to alter the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to is once again too quiet, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

There has been a trend for some time now to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Signia is not there yet with this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice but is not essential. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be feasible, which would trigger a specific function by tapping your fingers on the ear. However, this option is not available in the Pure 5 AX Charge&Go.

The operation of the Pure 5 AX Charge&Go is relatively simple via the accompanying app. It comes with a lot of additional features and has impressed us quite a bit. Especially the equalizer was something we enjoyed using during testing. As a normally hearing person, you might even feel a bit envious, as you don't find this in wireless headphones yet. For our digital everyday life, a streaming option would be nice. The device in question meets our wish and includes a 2.4 GHz radio module. With this, you can send phone calls and sounds directly from your smartphone to the hearing aids.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? Daily listening is made easier by the good automatic program in the Pure 5 AX Charge&Go. It's seldom necessary to use the manual hearing programs, as the automatic mode already covers many situations. Some people find it difficult to get used to, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The duration can range from a few weeks to several months, and it is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that one doesn't even notice that there has been a volume increase.

An extremely useful development in recent years, in our opinion, is the integrated battery. We are used to recharging electronic devices in our daily lives. And the Pure 5 AX Charge&Go is rechargeable, so we can do without the annoying battery changes.

The hearing aid has been classified in IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against the ingress of dust. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. It is therefore well-equipped for outdoor activities, where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

Read in our article about the IP protection classes what it means for hearing aids and what additional care you can contribute.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: Signia has integrated a sound generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from the tinnitus and promote a bit more relaxation.

A very good added benefit comes from the remote maintenance service. Through the app, users can contact their audiologist and describe their hearing problem. The audiologist can then adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. This is a great service for people with little time or a long journey.

One's own health is an important issue, which is why Signia provides its customers with a great feature: health tracking. For instance, physical activity is logged over a period of time. Sensors capture this data and then graphically present it in the corresponding app. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle functions, but those are not available in the Pure 5 AX Charge&Go. Other hearing aids can score points with language translators or fall alerts, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.

The optional remote adjustment allows you to test changes made by your audiologist directly in the corresponding situation. This makes the adjustment time-efficient and targeted.
