The Signia Silk 1 X CIC in review

Diese Technik ist bereits etwas veraltet und erhält daher einen Abzug in der Gesamtbewertung. Neuer und besser ist der aktuelle Signia IX-Chip.

Signia offers the Silk 1 X CIC, a thin, small hearing aid that is worn in the ear. It is a hearing aid from the more affordable price range and is suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss. The precise placement directly in the ear canal ensures that sound reaches the eardrum without loss.

Hearing comfort

In the hearing comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user's fondness for their hearing aids and their regular use. In this Signia device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. The regular noise suppression has the task of softening uniform, random background noises. In the Silk 1 X CIC, we have to settle for a minimum level of noise suppression.

A pulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Silk 1 X CIC. We missed wind noise suppression painfully. Those who are often outdoors may find the distinctly audible wind noises quite bothersome. The Silk 1 X CIC impresses us with its natural, spatial hearing. The outer ear retains its function, creating a 3D sensation as if one were not wearing a hearing aid at all. With 8 frequency bands, we are not entirely satisfied with the CIC, but it should suffice for uncomplicated hearing curves. The sound likely won't be entirely natural as a result.

Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet present in the Silk 1 X CIC.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there maybe an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let’s take a look at the control and connection options. First, we are interested in whether there is a button on the device. Unfortunately, we will be disappointed with the CIC, as there is no immediate adjustment option. A remote control is available for the Silk 1 X CIC. It’s quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume control option as well as various listening programs.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Signia unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical if fingers are not as mobile anymore or if you simply like smart gadgets. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, tap control might be conceivable, which would allow triggering a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the Silk 1 X CIC.

We find the app for the Silk 1 X CIC to be a bit sparse. It’s best to check out the demo version before purchasing the hearing aid to see if it meets your needs. But we don’t want to complain; the app is definitely useful. Unfortunately, we have to do without a streaming function here and continue holding the smartphone to our ear in the usual way.

Rating Operation & connectivity: 3,3

Simplicity & security

We are also naturally interested in how quickly one can get used to the Silk 1 X CIC and how easy daily use is. We would have liked to see an automatic program that adjusts itself to the environment in the Silk 1 X CIC. However, this is not available, so unfortunately, points are deducted at this point. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the hearing aid's volume in tiny increments until our target amplification is reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory experiences.

We regret that the Silk 1 X CIC does not have a rechargeable battery but instead operates with hearing aid batteries of size 10. This is not a significant issue, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a longer time on a single battery.

Unfortunately, this hearing aid does not have special protection against dust or moisture; at least, there is no certification that defines the robustness of the device. It may not be well-suited for an active daily life.

Extras

Finally, we are interested to know if there are any additional goodies on top: We would have liked to discover a tinnitus program at this point, but unfortunately, there isn’t one.

In these mobile times, a remote servicing option via an app would be very helpful. Through this, one could easily have a new hearing aid programming made from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Silk 1 X CIC. Therefore, if changes are needed, one must still visit the specialist store.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Signia model lacks the sensors for this service. The functionality of the Silk 1 X CIC is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri links provide a considerable added value, but they are not relevant for good hearing balance.
