What hearing comfort does the Silk 5 X CIC offer? How is it operated? Is it worth the purchase? You will find answers to these questions in our test report on this hearing aid from Signia. First, the basics: It is worn in the ear, and due to its position directly in the ear canal, sound can easily travel toward the eardrum. This is important, as it's the only way to produce really good, wideband sound.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noises does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied everyday life? Here with this test device, solid comfort programming by the acoustician is possible. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise reduction here. It is meant to reduce monotonous, noisy background sounds to a level where they are not as prominent. The Silk 5 X CIC offers a somewhat effective noise reduction.

A slightly stronger wind reduction would indeed be desirable, but the one in the Silk 5 X CIC is manageable. This device also detects impulsive sounds and reduces them to a tolerable level. With 16 frequency channels, the Silk 5 X CIC clearly belongs to the better devices and allows for individual, well-sounding programming. The Silk 5 X CIC impresses us with its natural, spatial hearing. The outer ear retains its function, making the 3D sensation feel just like not wearing a hearing aid at all.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device has not reached that point yet.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of functions are activated automatically by this Signia model. However, it can be very useful to expand the range of functionalities a bit. In our test, we discovered which options we have here. We couldn't find a button, which is a shame. Let's take a look further. We do like the small remote controls, and for this model, we found one. This allows for discreet minor adjustments to the volume or sound.

In the test, we found no option for voice control. This feature isn't strictly necessary, but we would have appreciated it. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple tap on this Signia model, as it would have required specific sensors in the casing.

The app is not one of our highlights. But at least there is one. And in times when almost every hearing aid user also owns a smartphone, this is definitely useful. Unfortunately, this variant completely lacks wireless connectivity options. This is somewhat outdated, but it is probably due to the small size of the hearing device.

Simplicity & security

We are also interested in how quickly one can get used to the Silk 5 X CIC and how easy daily use is. The Silk 5 X CIC automatically accesses the most important hearing settings, making daily use easier. However, those who frequently experience changing acoustic environments should have the manual additional programs configured. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions.

We regret that the Silk 5 X CIC does not have a battery but operates with hearing aid batteries size 10. This is not particularly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily and will run for a longer time on a single battery.

Unfortunately, this hearing aid does not have special protection against dust or moisture; at least, there is no certification that defines the robustness of the device. For an active daily life, it may not be very well suited.

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid maybe offers any specials: We noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. This applies a gentle noise to the ears if needed, to distract from the annoying tinnitus a bit. The sounds can be customized according to personal hearing preferences.

Unfortunately, there is no option for remote adjustment. Therefore, anyone who needs optimization and wants to change their hearing aid settings will have to visit an acoustic professional.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Silk 5 X CIC. The functionality of the Silk 5 X CIC is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional functions like fall alerts or Siri integrations offer significant added value, but are not relevant for good hearing balance.
