The Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC from Signia is a minimally visible hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. Thanks to its comfortable positioning of the speaker in the ear canal, very good sound transmission is possible. The Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC is a hearing aid from the lower mid-range and is suitable for mild, moderate, and more severe hearing needs.

Hearing comfort

We all agree that understanding speech is the most important task of hearing aids. However, from our experience in the hearing acoustics specialty shop, we also know that listening comfort is at least equally important. It is about processing background noise in such a way that it does not hinder speech understanding, while still creating a natural sound picture. In testing the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC, we find only the absolute essentials regarding listening comfort. Let’s take a look at the individual features:

Of course, this Signia device has noise suppression, as it is now standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioner, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. Here, we must settle for a minimum level of noise suppression.

A filter for rattling and popping noises is not present – unfortunately, there is no point awarded for that. When the wind sweeps over the microphones outside in nature, we wish for wind noise reduction. However, this is missing here, and in some outdoor situations, it can significantly impair listening comfort. The 8 frequency channels are okay. However, it might be that the programming does not quite meet the individual hearing needs precisely, and one may have to make some sound compromises. We are still quite far from a 3D surround sound. Only the optional focus to the front provides a little hearing support in social situations.

Despite modern comfort features, tricky hearing situations can still arise. For this, the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC has an assistant mode in its app. Behind this is artificial intelligence that analyzes the current environment and calculates a noticeably better setting.

How can one fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We have found out what access options are available with the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a button, which is a pity. Let's take a closer look. We do like the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.

The modern form of voice command operation is not yet present in the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC. Some hearing aids can be controlled with a quick tap of the finger without needing to press an extra button. However, this feature has not been implemented here yet.

The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a useful addition to the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone that receives phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. A compatible smartphone that contains the 2.4 GHz technology is a prerequisite. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear, but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal preferences.

Simplicity & security

We are also interested in how quickly one can get used to the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC and how easy the daily usage is. We do not necessarily experience easy, comfortable listening with the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC. In a quieter everyday life, one can manage quite well, but as soon as one has a varied listening experience, one cannot avoid manual adjustments. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.

A great relief in everyday life is the integrated rechargeable battery. This ensures that my Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC always has enough power for the whole day, and I no longer have to worry about the batteries suddenly running out in the middle of an event. Even with limited dexterity, a rechargeable battery system is very helpful because you don’t have to deal with inserting small button cells.

The specification sheet certifies the Signia device with an IP protection class rating of 68. This makes it one of the most robust hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the casing, as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, however, you can behave completely carefree.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find anything useful here: For example, a tinnitus option would be interesting. Unfortunately, we didn’t find any way to alleviate tinnitus in the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC.

The option for remote adjustment is really great. It is very helpful whenever you just want to change something small in the hearing aid settings but don’t want to make a trip to the audiologist. Instead, you make contact via the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.

If Signia had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individual health tracking could even be possible. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost in the evaluation of the Styletto 1 AX SLIM RIC. The device from Signia focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras such as voice assistants or translation features. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
