Hearing comfort
What is most annoying for hearing aid users? Exactly, background noise. Therefore, let’s first take a look at the comfort features included in the test device. The Evolv AI 1000 CIC allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. There is definitely normal noise suppression available. It is designed to suppress constant noises like street noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Starkey, we find a rather below-average noise suppression. Noise-sensitive individuals will have to make a few concessions regarding listening comfort.
An impulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Evolv AI 1000 CIC. Those who enjoy spending time outdoors will appreciate the wind noise suppression. While it doesn’t suppress as much, it is definitely useful. Let’s quickly take a look at the equalizer: With 10 bands, it is not particularly flexible. With a few more channels, we would surely have achieved a nicer, more natural sound experience. But at least, we can adjust the sound reasonably well to our hearing sensitivity. Spatial hearing with the Evolv AI 1000 CIC occurs in a completely natural way. Due to the special placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear is preserved, and there are no losses in directional hearing.
Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role here in signal processing. The sound is analyzed not only based on typical frequency patterns. In particularly intense, noisy situations, it is perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

Operation & connectivity
Every person has their own unique hearing needs. It is advantageous to be able to customize hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In the test, we discovered the following access options: There is usually a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Evolv AI 1000 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled upon request. Remote controls for hearing aids are actually common today, but Starkey has not provided one for this device.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but unfortunately this one from Starkey cannot yet. It would be practical if fingers are not as mobile anymore or if one simply likes smart gadgets. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control feature. This means you can just tap your ear briefly, and the device switches. However, we do not have that with Starkey, as it would have required specific sensors.
The almost standard smartphone app is also available for Evolv AI 1000 CIC. However, do not expect too much. There is a volume function and a program option, but then it unfortunately stops there. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we regret to inform you that a wireless module has unfortunately not been integrated here.

Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? The situation recognition did not really impress us. Quiet and loud environments are identified, and the Evolv AI 1000 CIC adjusts accordingly. But as soon as the acoustic conditions become more challenging, with various sources of noise appearing simultaneously, you may have to make some manual adjustments to the hearing aid. The integrated acclimatization manager can be a great help when entering the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way, you can relax and gradually get used to the new hearing impressions. Evolv AI 1000 CIC relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with one battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, you only have to deal with the power supply very rarely. Disadvantage: Waste is generated in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery of size 10.
Hearing aids are exposed to external influences. However, this model does not have any special coating against moisture or dust. This is unusual these days and surprises us. Therefore, optimal care is essential here.

What about remote maintenance? Such online services eliminate the need for a visit to the specialist store, as you can directly contact an acoustic professional through the app. Unfortunately, we didn't find such a feature for the Evolv AI 1000 CIC. That's a pity; it would have been a great additional tool.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track a few personal health data points, but the Evolv AI 1000 CIC does not offer this. Other hearing aids already have some extended options like a fall alarm or reminder functions. We don't find these here, and it's not too dramatic because the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
