The Evolv AI 1000 RIC R is a slightly visible hearing aid at a lower price point. We achieve clean sound transmission through the smart decision to place the speaker directly in the ear canal.

In the hearing comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. Comfortable noise management significantly contributes to a user liking and regularly wearing their hearing aids. In this Starkey device, we found only limited options for comfort adjustment. The standard noise suppression aims to mitigate uniform, hissing background noises. In the Evolv AI 1000 RIC R, stronger noise reduction would be desirable, but that is reserved for higher-end hearing aids.

While it doesn't reduce noise significantly, it is definitely useful. The microphone technology is quite simple. The hearing aids cannot create a true spatial feeling like those with normal hearing have. When trying to estimate directions or distances through hearing, one must be cautious; this is only reliably achieved after a certain acclimatization period. An important point in our tests is the number of frequency bands. This plays a role in the precise programming of the hearing aids. It is also important for distinguishing between speech and sounds. Here we have 10 bands. A few more could have been beneficial because, unfortunately, we cannot make such fine adjustments. Let’s take a look at how connectivity and usability stand with the Evolv AI 1000 RIC R. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for specific hearing situations through it. A remote control is available for the Evolv AI 1000 RIC R. It's quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume up-down option as well as various hearing programs.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see a voice control at this point. However, that is not currently available in the Evolv AI 1000 RIC R. Control by tapping requires that sensors are implemented in the hearing aid. This is indeed the case here. You can easily tap the ear shell with a few fingers or your flat hand to trigger a command. This could be, for example, the activation of a TV adapter or answering a phone call. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that contains the 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear, but in both. Furthermore, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Simplicity in hearing aids primarily means that it can flexibly adapt to changing hearing scenarios. The Evolv AI 1000 RIC R didn't quite convince us in this regard. While there is a situational recognition that differentiates between quieter and louder environments, it works. However, those who are active in their lives might occasionally encounter limitations with it. But that's not too bad, as one can fall back on manual adjustment options. A very important aspect of simplicity for us is support during the acclimatization phase. Especially after having heard poorly for years, it can sometimes be hard to perceive everything at a natural volume. In our test device, there is an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the adjustment period. After a few weeks or months, we reach the calculated amplification level.

An extremely useful development in recent years, in our opinion, is the integrated battery. We are used to recharging electronic devices in our everyday lives. The Evolv AI 1000 RIC R is also rechargeable, which allows us to avoid the hassle of changing batteries.
