Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right, will listening be perceived as pleasant. Normal background noises like street noise, the sound of a vacuum cleaner, or the noise from a fan should be attenuated by classic noise suppression. We shouldn't expect too much from this Starkey hearing aid. Speech and sounds are relatively close together here. But in acoustically simple situations, it should be sufficient.
A so-called noise filter would have been nice, as it would have made the clattering when emptying the dishwasher a bit more bearable. But we have to do without that with the Evolv AI 1600 IIC. The Evolv AI 1600 IIC is also well-equipped for windy outdoor situations. The signal processing can identify wind and lower it a bit. Spatial hearing with the Evolv AI 1600 IIC occurs in a completely natural way. The special placement deep in the ear canal preserves the function of the outer ear, and there are no losses in directional hearing. The Evolv AI 1600 IIC is one of the good hearing aids, at least regarding the number of frequency bands. With 16 bands, it is well-equipped for precise adjustments to personal sound preferences.
Understanding speech in noisy environments is always a challenge. Starkey addresses this issue with the use of artificial intelligence. The result is brilliant and clear speech transmission, while the background noises still reach the ear at a realistically loud level.

How can one fully exploit the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what access options are available with the Evolv AI 1600 IIC. Unfortunately, this hearing aid lacks a direct control option. This is presumably due to its small size. However, this doesn’t have to be a disadvantage, as often the automatic functions are sufficient. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted with a remote control – causing a few points to be lost.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Starkey cannot yet. It would be practical when fingers are not as agile anymore or if one simply likes smart gadgets. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control might be conceivable, triggering a specific function by tapping the ear with the fingers. However, this option is not available in the Evolv AI 1600 IIC.
If desired, one can use the free smartphone app. This app probably only covers the essentials. Loud, quiet, and programs – nothing more is included. Unfortunately, we have to do without a streaming function here and continue to hold the smartphone to the ear in the usual way.

Continuing with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? A reliable situational automatic system earns the Evolv AI 1600 IIC important points in terms of simplicity. Most hearing situations are well recognized, so manual adjustments are rarely necessary. Some people struggle with the adaptation, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is an adaptation manager that gradually guides us to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or even several months, and it is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that one hardly notices that there was a volume increase.
Many hearing aids today have a rechargeable battery, but the Evolv AI 1600 IIC continues to use disposable batteries. This is somewhat cumbersome to handle and also burdens the environment.
For a safe everyday feeling, a solid dust and moisture protection is also important. However, there is no IP certification present. Presumably, this model is not really well protected against penetrating dust or moisture. This is outdated and results in a point deduction.

This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from tinnitus, especially when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
Online services are becoming increasingly routine. There is often a remote maintenance service available for hearing aids. However, Starkey has not yet provided such a service for its Evolv AI 1600 IIC. You have to go to the specialist store every time you want to have your hearing aid reprogrammed. No extra points for that.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Starkey model lacks the necessary sensors for this service. Other hearing aids already offer a few advanced options such as a fall alert or reminder functions. We do not find this here, but that is not particularly dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
