Here we take a look at a hearing aid at a rather affordable price, which is worn behind the ear. It is called B Moxi 3 R and is produced by the manufacturer Unitron. It can be used by anyone with mild, moderate, and even severe hearing loss who wishes for a discreet hearing aid. By the clever decision to place the speaker directly into the ear canal, it has very good sound properties.

We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. However, from our experience in the hearing aid retail business, we also know that hearing comfort is at least as important. It is about processing background noise in such a way that it does not limit speech understanding, while still creating a natural sound image. During the testing of the B Moxi 3 R, a solid comfort programming by the audiologist is possible. Let’s take a look at the individual features:

Of course, this Unitron device has noise suppression, as it has become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. The manufacturer has integrated standard noise suppression here. It is active in the background but cannot be further adjusted.

Once you have experienced impulse sound suppression in a hearing aid, you never want to give it up. The B Moxi 3 R has such a feature and can therefore easily handle all short and sudden sound events. This includes, for example, the clinking of dishes in the kitchen or footsteps on a hard floor. Unitron should excite all outdoor fans with this device because wind is not only pleasantly dampened, but speech understanding should also continue to work seamlessly. We always pay close attention to the number of equalizer bands. They are important to adjust the sound of a hearing aid as accurately as possible to the hearing curve. Also, speech noise management takes place within these bands. The B Moxi 3 R has 12 of them. That’s acceptable. The device recognizes whether the microphones should transmit everything or focus on the front. This can help in conversation situations but does not replace true spatial hearing.

Artificial intelligence has also made its way into hearing aids, for example, here in the B Moxi 3 R. This means much more data is available to identify speech and noise. In our experience, the sound of hearing aids with AI is perceived as particularly precise and realistic.

The operation options for hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as everyone would like them to be. The basic functions naturally run automatically. We wanted to know how users can further access the B Moxi 3 R. The simplest method of operation is always a button directly on the hearing aid. This model has one as well. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want a manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for a gradual adjustment of the volume. Or do you need different special programs for your professional life or hobbies? These can also be activated using the button. If you prefer to leave everything in automatic mode, you can simply ignore the button or even have it disabled. We do enjoy having small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet small adjustments to the volume or sound.

This device from Unitron can be controlled by voice command. This very modern way of operating hearing aids is really convenient and, above all, very fast. Touch control requires that sensors are implemented in the hearing aid. This is indeed the case here. You can simply tap the ear shell with a few fingers or the flat of your hand to trigger a command. This could be, for example, the activation of a TV adapter or answering a phone call. Your hearing care professional will configure this with you.

The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app doesn't belong to our favorites, it is a helpful addition to the B Moxi 3 R. You no longer need headphones, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds from the smartphone directly to your ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to operate the hearing aid? When it comes to simplicity in hearing, we make no compromises. We expect the hearing aid to work fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press any buttons. We were a bit disappointed with the B Moxi 3 R in this regard. Only the basic situations are recognized automatically. This means that we cannot really get by without manual control options. The integrated acclimatization manager can be a great help when you start exploring the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This way you can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions. A charger is included with the B Moxi 3 R, as it has built-in batteries. This is modern, user-friendly, and we expect it from a contemporary hearing aid.

We had a carefree daily life during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands – all without any problems. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bath water or saltwater.

Zum Schluss schauen wir kurz, ob es noch irgendwelche Extras gibt: Hier ist uns die Tinnitus-Option aufgefallen. Wer mag, kann sich ein spezielles Tinnitus-Programm einrichten lassen. Das legt bei Bedarf ein sanftes Rauschen auf die Ohren, um vom nervigen Tinnitus ein wenig abzulenken. Die Geräusche können nach dem persönlichen Hörgeschmack gestaltet werden.

Unitron geht mit der Zeit und stellt mit dem Remote-Einstellungsservice ein zukunftsorientiertes Feature zur Verfügung. Berufstätige Menschen mit wenig Zeit können online mit ihrem Akustiker Kontakt aufnehmen und ihre Hörgeräte umprogrammieren lassen. Auch Hörgeräteträger, die einen längeren Anfahrtsweg zum Fachgeschäft haben, profitieren von diesem besonderen Service.

Hätte Unitron Bewegungssensoren in dieses Hörgerät integriert, dann könnte sogar ein individuelles Gesundheits-Tracking erfolgen. Das ist hier aber nicht der Fall. Diese Punkte gehen dem B Moxi 3 R in der Wertung verloren. Das Gerät von Unitron konzentriert sich auf die wesentlichen Hörfunktionen und bietet keine Extras wie Srachassistenten oder Übersetzungsfunktion an. Das hätte zwar Spaß gemacht, ist für ein gutes Hörerlebnis aber nicht erforderlich.
