The B Stride 5 P R from Unitron is a traditional hearing aid worn behind the ear. The customer receives a suitably sized hearing aid from a price range slightly above the average, which can compensate for mild to severe hearing losses.

We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. However, from our experience in the hearing acoustics retail sector, we also know that listening comfort is at least equally important. It is about processing background noise so that it does not hinder speech understanding while still creating a realistic sound picture. A solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional is possible when testing the B Stride 5 P R. Let’s take a look at the individual features:

Of course, this Unitron device has noise suppression, as this has become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous noises (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. Here, your expectations should not be too high. Street noise outside will be sufficiently reduced, but loud sounds will remain loud.

Extremely useful is the impulse sound suppression. It effectively captures all clattering, banging, and crackling sounds and reduces them reliably. Unitron is likely to delight all outdoor enthusiasts with this device, as wind is not only pleasantly dampened, but speech understanding should continue to function without issues. 16 adjustable equalizer bands provide enough flexibility to create a reliable, tailored listening experience. The adjustable microphones help to recognize specific directions and can also assist in noise cancellation, but the spatial sound was not very natural.

Strategies based on artificial intelligence have not yet been implemented in this Unitron hearing aid.

Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, so the question arises whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at the connectivity and usability of the B Stride 5 P R. The simplest way to operate it is always with a button directly on the hearing aid. This one has it too. It can be programmed according to your wishes. Do you want manual volume control? No problem, the button allows for step-by-step volume adjustment. Or do you need different special programs for your professional daily life or hobbies? These can also be activated using the button. Anyone who wants to keep everything in automatic mode can simply ignore the button or even have it deactivated. The small remote control, which is available as an option, is very practical. For us, it is one of the most convenient ways to adjust the hearing aid volume or switch to another hearing program. No one notices, and reaching for the ear is unnecessary.

Voice control for devices is widespread in other areas, and now it's also available for hearing aids. The B Stride 5 P R can adjust the volume or switch to another hearing program with a simple voice command. We were quite impressed with the tap control during testing. Just tap your ear briefly, and your Unitron hearing aid knows it needs to do something. We were already familiar with this sensor-controlled technology from wireless headphones, and it's great that it is now available in hearing aids too.

In the App Store, we also find a suitable application from Unitron. The app for the B Stride 5 P R isn't one of our highlights, but it has everything you need for your hearing systems. The B Stride 5 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna, allowing us the pleasure of binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normally hearing individuals. We appreciate this and are happy to give it points.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How does it stand in terms of user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? Typical hearing situations that everyone experiences in their environment are reliably recognized and adjusted through automatic settings. However, for more specific, recurring needs, one cannot avoid using the manual hearing programs. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.

In our opinion, a very useful development in recent years is the integrated battery. In our daily lives, we are accustomed to recharging electronic devices. The B Stride 5 P R is also rechargeable, allowing us to avoid the hassle of changing batteries.

We had a carefree daily life during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - all without any problems. However, the water resistance really only pertains to fresh, clean water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Finally, let's take a brief look to see if there are any extras: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the B Stride 5 P R upon request. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that can distract from tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.

A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious commodity. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Those needing a reprogramming of their hearing aids can easily contact their audiologist via the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a personalized setting as a data package to the app. From there, it will be uploaded to the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health features today. However, since the B Stride 5 P R does not have any specific sensors for that purpose, we cannot present any special features here. Other hearing aids do have a few extended options such as a fall alarm or reminder functions. We do not find this here, and that is not so dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
