We tested a discreet hearing aid this time from an affordable price range. It is the Unitron DX Moxi 3 Move R. It is worn behind the ear and is designed for both mild and more significant hearing needs. The deep placement of the speaker in the ear canal is thanks to its design, which is why it delivers a beautiful, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant hearing is in everyday life. A solid comfort programming by the hearing aid acoustician is possible with this hearing aid. A classic noise suppression is intended to reduce annoying background noises to a tolerable level. The DX Moxi 3 Move R is not the most powerful variant, but it should suffice for everyday use regarding noise suppression. The DX Moxi 3 Move R impresses us with its wind reduction and offers good performance in this aspect.

Short, loud sounds are quickly recognized and effectively reduced in the DX Moxi 3 Move R, thanks to an adjustable impulse sound suppressor. In our tests, we also look at spatial hearing. While adaptive microphones are integrated, the wireless connectivity between both ears is missing, which prevents the reconstruction of true 3D hearing. Nevertheless, one can manage quite well. With a little practice, directional hearing can be retrained. A solid basis for programming the DX Moxi 3 Move R is provided by the 12 equalizer bands. As sound junkies, we would wish for a few more, but for the typical situations we experience in our everyday lives, a quite reasonable sound image can already be created from it.

The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Rating Hearing comfort: 3,2

Operation & connectivity

“Can I make adjustments myself on my hearing aid?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the operating and connectivity options. First, we noticed a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical because it’s the simplest and quickest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different listening programs can also be activated. If someone prefers not to make adjustments directly on the ear, the button can of course be disabled. Those who don't like to touch their ear to increase the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows one to make changes to the hearing aid comfortably and discreetly.

We are always excited when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But it is currently not available in the DX Moxi 3 Move R. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. However, this option is not available in this Unitron device.

The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app isn't one of our favorites, it is still a useful addition to the DX Moxi 3 Move R. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headset, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that incorporates the 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not only in one ear but in both. Additionally, the sound can be adjusted to personal preferences.

Simplicity & security

Another point on our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? We expected a bit more support in daily hearing from the automatic situation recognition. While the situations "Silence" and "Noise" are recognized, the sound environment is usually a bit more complex. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated for. I don't have to do anything but wear my hearing aids regularly.

The DX Moxi 3 Move R comes with a charger, as it has built-in batteries. This is modern, user-friendly, and is what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Extras

Finally, let's take a quick look to see if there are any extras available: Here we noticed the tinnitus option. If desired, one can set up a special tinnitus program. This gently plays soothing sounds to distract from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.

A very good additional benefit is offered by the remote maintenance service. Through the app, one can contact their hearing care professional and describe their hearing problem. They can then adjust the settings accordingly and load them into the hearing aids through the app. This is a great service for people with little time or a long commute.

If Unitron had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individualized health tracking could even be possible. However, this is not the case here. These points lead to a loss in the evaluation of the DX Moxi 3 Move R. This Unitron hearing aid does not have any additional lifestyle options onboard. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but these are not necessary for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
