The Widex Magnify 100 CIC-M in review

Widex presents the Magnify 100 CIC-M, a model from the lower mid-range. It can compensate for mild to moderate hearing loss. It is a small, hardly noticeable hearing aid that provides good sound due to its natural, cleverly chosen fit directly in the ear canal. It is worn in the ear.

Hearing comfort

First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the listening experience is. In this hearing aid, we found only limited options for comfort adjustments. The traditional noise suppression ensures that uniform, insignificant sounds are slightly reduced. With the Magnify 100 CIC-M, you should not have overly high expectations. Street noise outside will be adequately reduced, but loud sounds will remain loud. This model does not include wind noise management. The hearing aid sits so far inside the ear canal that wind noise does not become an issue at all.

A pulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Magnify 100 CIC-M. With the Magnify 100 CIC-M, 3D hearing does not need to be reconstructed, as it remains perfectly intact. This is made possible by the deep seating in the ear canal. The equalizer in the Magnify 100 CIC-M has only 6 bands. This means that when making adjustments, you can only access fairly large frequency ranges. Thus, changes always affect a lot, and the small nuances cannot be implemented.

Artificial intelligence-based strategies are not yet used in this hearing aid from Widex.

Operation & connectivity

The operation options for hearing aids are today as simple or as complex as anyone would like them to be. The basic functions run fully automatically, of course. We wanted to know how users can access the Magnify 100 CIC-M beyond that. There is no control element directly on the hearing aid. For space reasons, a button is sometimes omitted. We did not find a remote control. Too bad, because we actually find this discreet operation option quite nice.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But there is currently none in the Magnify 100 CIC-M. Tap Control would also have been an interesting feature. With that, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. But this is not available in the Magnify 100 CIC-M yet.

A very typical operating option nowadays is apps for smartphones. The Magnify 100 CIC-M also has an app. This allows you to intuitively adjust the volume or switch programs. You can't go wrong with it, as there isn't much more to it. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we unfortunately have to disappoint you, as a wireless module has unfortunately not been integrated here.

Simplicity & security

Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? Unfortunately, the Magnify 100 CIC-M cannot provide automatic situation recognition; we have to make manual adjustments to hear well in different acoustic situations. Some people have difficulty getting used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to adapt to the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The period can last from a few weeks to several months; this can be individually adjusted. The individual steps are so small that you don’t even notice that there has been a volume increase.

The data sheet certifies the Widex device with an IP68 protection class certification. This makes it one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust doesn't stand a chance, and water does not penetrate the case as long as it isn’t submerged deeper than 1.5 meters. Nevertheless, be careful. For example, shampoo alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in everyday life, you can behave completely carefree.

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some: Widex has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

What about remote support? Such online services save a trip to the specialist store because you can directly contact the acoustic professional through the app. Unfortunately, we couldn't find anything like that for the Magnify 100 CIC-M. That's a shame, as it would have been a great additional tool.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Widex model lacks the sensors for that service. Other hearing aids already offer some advanced options like a fall alarm or reminder functions. We don’t find that here, and that's not so dramatic, as the normal hearing functions are still the most important.

With a final grade of 3.38, this model holds its ground in the mid-range. It has a quite decent comfort feature set on board, sufficient for typical everyday moments and creates a satisfying listening experience.
