The Widex Magnify 40 CIC in review
The Magnify 40 CIC by Widex is a standard hearing aid with a thick or thin plastic tube that is worn behind the ear. The customer receives a delicate, small hearing aid from the business class, with which they can compensate for a moderate hearing need.
Hearing comfort
What is most bothersome for hearing aid users? Exactly, background noise. That's why we will first look at which comfort features the test device includes. In the Magnify 40 CIC, we found only a few options for comfort adjustment. Normal noise reduction is definitely present. It is supposed to reduce constant sounds like traffic noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Widex, we have to settle for a minimal level of noise suppression.
Unfortunately, an impulse sound suppressor is not included in the Magnify 40 CIC. For this model, wind noise management can be omitted. The hearing aid sits so far in the ear canal that wind noises do not become a problem at all. The equalizer in the Magnify 40 CIC has only 6 bands. This means that changes can only be made in rather large frequency ranges. Thus, you always change quite a lot at once, and the small nuances cannot be implemented. The special design of the Magnify 40 CIC proves to be a stroke of luck when it comes to spatial hearing. The microphones are positioned deep in the ear canal, and it is exactly there that sound reaches normal hearing individuals. Therefore, spatial hearing does not need to be artificially recreated; it occurs naturally.
An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet applied in this Widex model.

Operation & connectivity
The operating options for hearing aids today are as simple or as complex as anyone would like them to be. The basic functions operate fully automatically, of course. We wanted to know how a user can further access the Magnify 40 CIC. Often there is a button on the hearing aid, but we did not find one on this model. Sometimes a control element is omitted in favor of a smaller design. This is not too dramatic since most functions in the hearing aid operate automatically anyway. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – a few points are lost there.
In the test, we found no option for voice control. This feature is not necessarily essential, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of a finger without having to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.
An additional app for individual operation would be nice, but is currently not offered for this hearing aid. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we regret to inform you that a wireless module has unfortunately not been integrated here.

Simplicity & security
Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? Regarding relaxed listening, the Magnify 40 CIC is only easy if one predominantly stays in quiet listening environments. If it gets louder or more challenging, we do not receive support from adaptive situation automatics. If anything, we can only rely on manual operation options. For hearing aid beginners, an acclimatization manager is desirable. It ensures that the required target amplification is achieved in very small, barely noticeable steps. However, there is no such manager in this hearing aid. This means we must either cope immediately with the necessary volume or visit the audiologist a few more times in the coming weeks and months for further assistance.
The Magnify 40 CIC gets its energy from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered, especially in case of motor issues. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.
We had an unburdened everyday life during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We walked through the rain and then took the hearing aids out with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to soapy bathwater or saltwater.

Widex Magnify 40 CIC:
Extras
Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find something useful here: For example, a tinnitus option would be interesting. Unfortunately, we did not find any way to alleviate tinnitus in the Magnify 40 CIC.
We find the remote service quite exciting, which can be utilized. If you have no opportunity to visit the hearing care professional, you contact them via the app instead, briefly describe your hearing problem, and then receive a data package with a new hearing aid configuration. If it sounds good, you upload it to your hearing aids.
If Widex had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, individualized health tracking could even be possible. However, this is not the case here. These points are lost for the Magnify 40 CIC in the evaluation. It would have also been nice to have some lifestyle features, but those are not available in the Magnify 40 CIC. Other hearing aids can score with language translators or fall alarms, but here, it remains within the usual scope of functions.
