The Widex Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP in review
The Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP from Widex is a conventional hearing aid that is worn behind the ear. The customer receives a slightly visible hearing aid from the high-end category, which allows them to compensate for a moderate hearing need.
Hearing comfort
The listening comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. That’s why we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. With this model, which Widex presents to us, we found very few options for influencing comfort. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to alleviate annoying background noises. In the Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP, we have to settle for a minimum level of noise suppression. This model does not require wind noise management. The hearing aid sits so deep in the ear canal that wind noise does not become a problem at all.
Unfortunately, we did not find a noise filter that reacts to short, loud sounds. Spatial hearing with the Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP occurs in a completely natural way. Due to the special placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear remains intact, and there are no losses in directional hearing. The equalizer in the Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP offers only 6 bands. This means that when making changes, one can only access rather large frequency ranges. Therefore, adjustments always change quite a lot, and the small nuances cannot be implemented.
Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet present in the Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP.
Rating Hearing comfort: 3,7
Operation & connectivity
How can one fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what access options are available with the Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP. We searched in vain for a button as a quick access option. It probably fell victim to its small design. That's manageable, as most settings are adjusted automatically by the hearing aid anyway. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you're talking to is speaking too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
Voice commands are a rather new way of operating hearing aids. However, we do not have this option in this model yet. That's not a big deal - the main thing is that you can hear well. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without having to press a button. This feature has not been implemented here yet.
We missed an app for the Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP during the test. If operating via smartphone is important to you, you should look for another model. There is no connection option to other audio sources here. It's a pity, as a wireless streaming function would have offered real added value.

Simplicity & security
How does one cope with the hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will evaluate. Because only when such a device works simply and unobtrusively can one become accustomed to it. We would have liked to see an automatic program that adapts to the environment in the Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP. However, this feature does not exist, so unfortunately, we must deduct points in this regard. Normally, an automatic acclimatization manager supports us in the first weeks with the new hearing aid. However, this model does not have such a feature, and we have to take care of regular re-fitting ourselves.
The Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP gets its power from small disposable batteries that need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered, especially for those with motor skills issues. A rechargeable battery would be significantly easier to handle.
We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and find the protection class IP 68 in the data sheet. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes hazardous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Widex Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP:
Extras
Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find any here: First, we look for a special tinnitus program. Ear noises are a troublesome topic for many people. However, we did not find an option for tinnitus relief in the Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. To change the hearing aid settings, you no longer have to go to the specialist store but can directly contact the audiologist via the app. Using a cloud service, you can then upload the new data package to the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
There are no sensors in this Magnify 40 variant, so the popular health tracking feature cannot be offered. For example, it counts the steps taken throughout the day. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function onboard. This Widex hearing aid lacks additional lifestyle options as well. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.

Conclusion: Widex Magnify 40 ITE 312 XP
This test device ends up in the lower ranks and lacks some features. We award a score of 3.53. This is acceptable for less demanding listeners, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
