Once again, we are focusing on a hearing aid from the company ReSound. This time it is a standard hearing aid with a thick or thin plastic tube behind the ear, named Key 4 77-DW. It is a discreet hearing aid, and in terms of price, it falls into an affordable price range. It can be used for mild to moderate hearing loss. Let's take a look at what the inner workings have to offer:
Hearing comfort
A good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is the auditory comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right, is hearing experienced as pleasant. Therefore, let's take a look at the comfort features: With the Key 4 77-DW, we find only the bare essentials when it comes to hearing comfort. Normal environmental noises such as street noise, vacuum cleaner sounds, or those from the fan are to be dampened by a classic noise suppression. This ReSound hearing aid includes only a very slight noise reduction.
A pulse sound filter is also said to be implemented. It dampens the short, clattering noises but does so only very minimally; that's not really helpful. The Key 4 77-DW does have wind reduction, but it doesn't really make a difference outdoors. The hearing aid automatically decides whether the microphones should orient towards a speaker or not. One gets a decent spatial impression, but accurately assigning directions or estimating distances through hearing is not so easy. The Key 4 77-DW has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it.
Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device has not yet reached that level.

Operation & connectivity
Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, so the question arises whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Key 4 77-DW. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through it. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is with the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you are talking to speaks too softly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.
In the test, we did not find a way to control it via voice. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Some hearing aids can be operated with a simple tap of the finger without needing to press a button. However, this feature is not yet implemented here.
As expected, we find a suitable app for the smartphone. This is a powerful app that trusts its user and provides an extensive toolbox. Problems with phone calls on the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. It is about everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to go through life with the hearing aid. We get relatively little support from the program automation in the Key 4 77-DW. Without a few individual hearing programs, one will probably not cope in a lively everyday life. This device supports the acclimatization to the new hearing sensation with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don’t have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand a variety of adverse conditions. Dust cannot penetrate, it can endure prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Extras
Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find any here: ReSound has integrated a sound generator that plays calming sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a little more relaxation.
A real added value is the remote maintenance service. For changes in hearing aid settings, it is no longer necessary to visit the specialty store, but instead, you can directly contact the audiologist through the app. You can then load the new data package into the hearing aids via a cloud service. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this ReSound model lacks the necessary sensors for this service. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but those are not available in the Key 4 77-DW. Other hearing aids can score points with translation features or fall alarms, but here it remains with the usual range of functions.
