Widex offers the Moment 220 RIC 10, a miniature hearing aid about 1 cm long, worn behind the ear. It is a hearing aid from a still moderate price category and is suitable for mild to severe hearing losses. The direct orientation of the speaker into the ear canal ensures that the sound reaches the eardrum without losses.

Hearing comfort

First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the hearing experience becomes. In this hearing aid, we found limited options for comfort enhancement. The traditional noise suppression ensures that uniform, unimportant sounds are slightly reduced. With the Moment 220 RIC 10, we are not exactly spoiled, but we can manage well with basic noise suppression. Unfortunately, this hearing aid does not yet have wind noise suppression. What a pity.

Quick, explosive sounds are detected here, but only moderately reduced. Spatial hearing is a bit challenging at first, but once you understand how the microphones behave in certain situations, you can estimate directions and distances quite reliably. An important point in our tests is the number of frequency bands. It plays a role when it comes to the precise programming of the hearing aids. This number is also important for distinguishing between speech and noise. Here, we have 10 bands. A few more could have been beneficial, as this limits our ability to make finer adjustments. However, those who do not place much value on a brilliant sound experience might get along quite well with the Moment 220 RIC 10.

An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet implemented in this Widex model.

Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, which raises the question of whether it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Moment 220 RIC 10. Often there is a button on the hearing aid, but we did not find one in this model. Sometimes, this control element is omitted in favor of a smaller design. This is not too dramatic, as most functions in the hearing aid operate automatically anyway. Those who do not like to touch their ear to adjust the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows for convenient and discreet adjustments to the hearing aid.

In the test, we did not find any option for voice control. This feature is not necessarily essential, but we would have liked it nonetheless. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without having to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.

An app for individual control is available for free. However, it only includes basic functions that are useful, but the app is not really enjoyable to use. Smartphones or tablets can be easily connected to a small streaming device that transmits the sound wirelessly to the hearing aid.

User-friendliness is the next aspect we want to address. This is about everyday practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. The Moment 220 RIC 10 automatically accesses the most important hearing settings, making daily use easier. However, those who frequently experience changing acoustic environments should have manual additional programs configured. The device supports the adjustment to the new hearing experience with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I only need to consistently wear my hearing aids.

The Moment 220 RIC 10 gets its power from small single-use batteries, which need to be changed every few days. While this is not rocket science, it should be considered, especially for those with motor skill issues. A rechargeable battery would be much easier to handle.

With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged immersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

In conclusion, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: A special tinnitus program is currently programmable on request for the Moment 220 RIC 10. With this, stimulating, pleasant sounds can be generated that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and gladly award extra points.

A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. If someone needs a new programming for their hearing aids, they can easily contact the acoustician via the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tested immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the Moment 220 RIC 10. The device from Widex focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good listening experience.
