The G5 6 P HdO by Audio Service is a traditional hearing aid worn behind the ear. The customer receives a slightly visible hearing aid at a lower price level, with which they can compensate for moderate to severe hearing needs.

Hearing comfort

What is most annoying for hearing aid users? Exactly, the background noise. That’s why we first look at what comfort features the test device includes. With the G5 6 P HdO, we found very few options for comfort adjustments. There is definitely a normal background noise suppression. It is designed to dampen constant noises like street noise or the hum of an air conditioner. In our test device from Audio Service, we're not exactly spoiled, but we can manage well with simple noise suppression.

Quick, sharp sounds are detected here, but only moderately reduced. There is a basic wind noise reduction. Outside, this is quite useful, but it is actually not sufficient for a strong autumn wind. We also look at the number of equalizer bands: the device from Audio Service has 8. We're not really happy with that; the options for sound adjustment are rather limited. However, it is sufficient for good speech understanding. The hearing aid can automatically orient itself towards the speaker in front, but we don't receive much more support for spatial hearing from the G5 6 P HdO.

Audio Service does not yet use artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of functions are automatically activated by this audio service model. However, it is sometimes very useful to be able to slightly expand the range of functions. In our test, we found out what options we have here. Usually, there is a button on the hearing aid, and we found that on the G5 6 as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be deactivated upon request. Those who do not like to touch their ear to adjust the volume will be pleased with the optional remote control. This allows for comfortable and discreet adjustments to the hearing aid.

We are always happy when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control here. However, it is currently not available in the G5 6 P HdO. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without the need to press an extra button. This feature, however, has not yet been implemented here.

The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is a valuable addition to the G5 6 P HdO. You no longer need headphones, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds from the smartphone directly into the ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

Now let's take a look at how the usage in everyday life is structured. Is the handling easy? Do I receive a secure device? The first points in the chapter on simplicity are lacking in the G5 6 P HdO, as it does not have automatic adaptation to hearing situations. We have to adjust ourselves until we can cope with the respective hearing situation. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a longer period and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a huge relief. The volume does not need to be turned up to maximum immediately. One can start at a lower level and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.

Unfortunately, the G5 6 P HdO does not come with a rechargeable battery, so regular size 13 batteries are needed for operation.

The G5 6 is almost dust and waterproof and, with its IP 68 rating, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Sometimes, hearing aids have additional features that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Audio Service device: We really liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the G5 6 P HdO is actually nothing more than a sound generator. It is about producing broadband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all listening areas. The tinnitus gets drowned out and is no longer perceived as disturbing.

A nice feature would be a remote maintenance service, to get help from the hearing professional even when you can't come into the store. But unfortunately, this is not available here, so there are no extra points.

Many hearing aids today still come with a few health functions. However, since the G5 6 P HdO does not have any specific sensors for that, we cannot present any special features here. This Audio Service hearing aid has no additional lifestyle options on board. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.

In the overall view, this device ranks low and provides us with little more than a solid basic equipment. Of course, one can understand speech with the device, just like with all hearing aids, but not much is done to reduce listening effort. Our overall rating: 5.26.
