The Audio Service G5 8 Duo in review

Dieses Hörgerät wurde in seiner Gesamtnote mit einem Abschlag versehen, da es schon ein wenig älter ist. Es gibt bereits deutlich neuere Hörtechniken von diesem und anderen Herstellern.

Audio Service brings its G5 8 Duo to market, a traditional hearing aid from the affordable segment. It is a small hearing aid for mild to moderate hearing loss and is worn behind the ear.

Hearing comfort

Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to background noise level is right will hearing be perceived as pleasant. Therefore, let's take a look at the comfort features: In the G5 8 Duo, we found very few options for comfort adjustment. Normal environmental noises like street noise, vacuum cleaner sounds, or fan noise should be dampened by classic noise suppression. In this Audio Service hearing aid, a stronger noise reduction would be desirable, but that is reserved for higher-quality hearing aids.

The G5 8 Duo also offers impulse sound suppression. It reliably detects all short, rattling noises, but the damping is rather low. We found basic wind detection, but unfortunately, nothing can be adjusted. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. A few more frequency channels would certainly be desirable, but the existing 12 channels are already quite workable.

An exciting topic in hearing acoustics is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet implemented in this Audio Service model.

Operation & connectivity

Every person has their own unique hearing needs. It is advantageous if one can customize their hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In the test, we discovered the following access options: For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume up or down, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through this. A remote control is available for the G5 8 Duo. It is quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume control option as well as various hearing programs.

Voice commands are a relatively new way to operate hearing aids. However, in this model, we do not have this option yet. That is not a big deal - the main thing is that you can hear well. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is by tapping control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. But this audio service device does not have this option.

The app is definitely very useful. Anyone who has a smartphone should download it. Although the app is not one of our favorites, it is a useful addition to the G5 8 Duo. Problems with telephone calls using the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Calls, music, and other sounds are completely wirelessly transmitted to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls and while listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a suitable smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

The best alternatives to the G5 8 Duo

Our database contains 8 reviews of hearing aids with similar technical features to this one (i.e., in klassischer Bauform in Size "", not rechargable, geeignet für Hörverlust-Grad leicht & mittel). Here are the top 3 (Redaktionsstand 02.10.2025):

Simplicity & security

An important factor for the acceptance of a hearing aid is its suitability for everyday use. This includes, for example, automated functions as well as robustness and user-friendliness. Unfortunately, there is no powerful situational automation in the G5 8 Duo. We have to settle for a few standard settings. Active hearing aid users will certainly encounter limitations here. Very important in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after years of hearing poorly, it can be difficult to perceive everything at a realistic volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us with very small volume adjustments throughout the acclimatization phase. After a few weeks or months, we then reach the calculated amplification level.

Zinc-air batteries supply the G5 8 Duo with energy. Changing the batteries could become quite cumbersome for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about this, it's better to look for a rechargeable model.

We had a carefree everyday experience in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - all without any problems. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bath water or seawater.

Extras

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: Are you among those affected by tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the G5 8 Duo. Soft, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It’s nothing more than a distraction technique, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus disappears into the general noise and no longer irritates. This is a simple but effective tool and earns extra points from us.

An online contact with the hearing care professional via the app would be very useful. This is quite common today and provides assistance with minor adjustment issues. Unfortunately, Audio Service does not offer this, and therefore does not earn any extra points.

There are no sensors in this G5 8 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered either. For example, daily steps are counted. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this feature on board. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but these are not present in the G5 8 Duo. Other hearing aids may score with speech translators or fall alarms, but here it remains with the usual range of functions.

Conclusion: Audio Service G5 8 Duo

In summary, this device ranks towards the bottom and provides us with little more than a solid basic level of equipment. Of course, it is possible to understand speech with this device, just like with all hearing aids, but not much is done to alleviate hearing effort. Our overall rating: 5.02. Please always relate this rating to the price range of this hearing aid.
