What exactly can the G5 8 P HdO from the manufacturer Audio Service do? First of all, it is an ear device that was widely used in the past and sits behind the ear. It covers a moderate to severe hearing loss. This model is a small hearing aid from an affordable price segment. What can it achieve in everyday hearing situations? What comfort features does it have? We took a closer look at this.
Hearing comfort
Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right will listening be perceived as pleasant. That’s why we take a look at the comfort features: In the G5 8 P HdO, we found only limited options for influencing comfort. Normal ambient sounds like street noise, vacuum cleaner sounds, or those from a fan are supposed to be dampened by a classic noise suppression. In this Audio Service hearing aid, a stronger noise reduction would be desirable, but this is reserved for higher-quality hearing aids.
The G5 8 P HdO also has impulse noise suppression. It reliably detects all brief, rattling sounds, but the attenuation is rather low. The device from Audio Service can also detect wind noise, but the subsequent noise reduction is quite minimal. For regular daily activities, that is sufficient, but true outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with this. We miss a good room sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. We always take a close look at the number of equalizer bands. They are important for adjusting the sound of a hearing aid as accurately as possible to the hearing curve. Moreover, speech noise management also takes place within these bands. The G5 8 P HdO has 12 of them. That’s okay.
The signal processing is based, among other things, on typical frequency patterns of speech and noise, but artificial intelligence is not yet in use here.

Operation & connectivity
How can one fully harness the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We have discovered the access options available with the G5 8 P HdO. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With this, one can adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. Of course, the use is optional. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person opposite speaks too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or for driving can also be activated with the remote control.
Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Audio Service unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical when fingers are not as mobile anymore or if someone simply likes smart gadgets. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. For this, you simply tap your fingers on the ear, which in turn triggers a specific function. But this option is not available in this Audio Service device.
The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even if the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a helpful addition to the G5 8 P HdO. You no longer need headphones here, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds directly from the smartphone into the ears – if the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? The G5 8 P HdO can independently differentiate between quiet and loud environments, but there is not much more to the program automation. Manual adjustment options are hardly dispensable here. A great bonus of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, it is an enormous relief. The volume does not need to be immediately raised to its maximum. One can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target.
Unfortunately, the G5 8 P HdO is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so you regularly need size 13 batteries for operation.
We had a carefree everyday life in our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and subsequently removed the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to bubbly bath water or saltwater.

Extras
At the end of our test report, there is a bit of space for the extra features: A special tinnitus program can be programmed into the G5 8 P HdO upon request. This allows for the generation of stimulating, pleasant sounds that distract from the tinnitus when it is particularly strong. We find this very useful and are happy to award extra points.
A nice feature would be a remote maintenance service to receive help from a hearing professional even when one cannot come to the store. Unfortunately, this is not available here, so there are no extra points.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this audio service model lacks the sensors for this service. The hearing aid also foregoes additional functions such as special assistance systems, a fall alert, or language translators. This is not particularly problematic, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.

In summary, this device ranks towards the lower end and provides us with little more than a solid basic configuration.
