The Audio Service G8 4 DIC in review

We are once again in the test lab, and this time we had a product from Audio Service in our hands, or rather, on our ear. The full product name is G8 4 DIC, and it is positioned in the solid mid-price range of devices. Due to its barely noticeable wearing place in the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The G8 4 DIC is worn in the ear and is a very delicate miniature hearing aid for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noises does the hearing aid detect? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we found very few options for comfort adaptation. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical noise reduction here. It is supposed to reduce monotone, noisy background sounds to a level where they no longer stand out so much. With the G8 4 DIC, it only works very limitedly. Looking at the price, that could fit.

For active outdoor enthusiasts, we always find wind noise management useful. While this device does have one, it is not very effective. It cannot be adjusted individually either. Sudden noises are likely cushioned, but we did not really notice the effect. We also take a look at the number of equalizer bands: the device from Audio Service has 8. We aren’t really happy with that; the options for sound shaping are quite limited. But it is sufficient for good speech understanding. Spatial hearing happens with the G8 4 DIC in a very natural way. Due to its special placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear is preserved, and there are no losses in directional hearing.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but that is not the case with this device yet.

Operation & connectivity

Although hearing aids are now very smart, they still cannot read the thoughts of the hearing aid wearer. Thus, the automation sometimes reaches its limits. Individual adjustment options can be really useful, so let's briefly look at the options available with the G8 4 DIC: We searched in vain for a button as a quick access option. It has probably fallen victim to the small design. That’s manageable, as the hearing aid makes most adjustments automatically anyway. On request, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows the volume to be effortlessly adjusted. The handling is not only very easy, but no one will also notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

In the test, we found no option for voice control. This function is not strictly necessary, but it would have pleased us nonetheless. Another option to control the hearing aids is a tapping control. To do this, you simply tap your fingers on your ear, which in turn triggers a specific function. However, this possibility is not available in this Audio Service device.

We find the app for the G8 4 DIC a bit sparse. It’s best to check the demo version before purchasing the hearing aid to see if it meets your needs. But we don’t want to complain; the app is definitely useful. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible, as the corresponding hardware components are missing. One should carefully consider whether one can do without this feature, but just give it a try.

Simplicity & security

Another point on our checklist is handling. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? We receive relatively little support from the program automation in the G8 4 DIC. Without a few individual hearing programs, one will probably not cope in a lively everyday life. Some people find it difficult to adjust, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to adapt to the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually takes us to the required target amplification. The period can last a few weeks or several months, and it is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that one hardly notices that there has just been a volume increase.

Unfortunately, the G8 4 DIC is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so regular size 10 batteries are needed for operation.

We had a carefree everyday life during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only refers to fresh, natural water and not to frothy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

We are almost at the end, but perhaps this device still has a few gifts in the form of extra features? Let’s take a look: Tinnitus is a concern for many people, but unfortunately, this hearing aid does not have a specific tinnitus sound program. So, we cannot award an extra point here.

Unfortunately, there is no option for remote adjustment. Therefore, anyone who needs optimization and wants to change their hearing aid settings will have to visit an audiology professional.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the G8 4 DIC. Other hearing aids do offer a few enhanced options like a fall alarm or reminder functions. We do not find that here, and that is not so dramatic because the normal hearing functions are still the most important.

This test device ranks low overall and lacks some features. We assign it a grade of 3.67. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more comprehensive comfort features.
