The Audio Service G8 6 DIC in review

Are you curious about this hearing aid from Audio Service? Let's see what we have found out. The G8 6 DIC is designed for mild to moderate hearing loss and is worn in the ear. It is a lightweight, barely visible and noticeable hearing aid from the affordable segment.
Due to the audiologically sensible placement directly in the ear canal, we achieve a good, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

Good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is hearing comfort. Only when the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right will hearing be perceived as pleasant. That’s why we take a look at the comfort features: With the G8 6 DIC, we found only a few options for influencing comfort. Normal ambient sounds like street noise, vacuum cleaner noise, or that from a fan are to be dampened by classic noise suppression. In this Audio Service hearing aid, your expectations shouldn't be too high. Street noise outside will certainly be sufficiently reduced, but what is loud will also remain loud.

Our test discovered impulse noise suppression. It reduces bangs and sudden noises a little. We found a basic wind detection feature, but unfortunately, there’s nothing adjustable there. In spatial hearing, the G8 6 DIC shows its full strength: Due to its deep positioning just before the eardrum, sound capture occurs as if it were an ear without a hearing aid. The outer ear naturally directs sound into the ear canal, and the existing head shadow effects continue to be utilized. Such good 3D hearing could probably not be artificially created. The G8 6 DIC has 12 adjustable frequency bands and thus operates in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly extract a reasonable sound from it.

An exciting topic in hearing acoustics is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet applied in this Audio Service model.

Operation & connectivity

Buttons, switches, controls ... or would you rather have an app? Control elements can significantly expand the functionality of hearing aids. Is there something like that in the G8 6 DIC? We checked. Directly on the hearing aid, there is no control element. For space reasons, a button is sometimes omitted. We do like the small remote controls, and for this model, we found one. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.

We are always pleased when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For instance, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But currently, it is not available in the G8 6 DIC. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be an option, which would trigger a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the G8 6 DIC.

The app is not one of our highlights. But at least - there is one. And in times when almost every hearing aid user also owns a smartphone, this is definitely useful. However, there is no possibility to connect to other audio sources. Too bad, because a wireless streaming function would have provided real added value.

Simplicity & security

Now let's briefly discuss the practicality for everyday use. Is the G8 6 DIC user-friendly and easy to handle? Does it have water protection? Here are our findings: The automatic situation recognition is supposed to make listening easier. However, the G8 6 DIC does not handle changing or difficult acoustic environments very well, as it lacks some adaptive algorithms. Additionally, one should always have a few extra hearing programs adjusted for this device. The adaptation to the new hearing sensation is supported by a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I just need to wear my hearing aids regularly.

The G8 6 DIC is not equipped with a rechargeable battery. It uses a hearing aid battery of size 10 as its power source, which needs to be replaced every few days.

The hearing aid has been classified under protection class IP 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily damage the hearing aid. It is therefore well equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, you should not necessarily bathe or swim with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Extras

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for extra features: Do you suffer from tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the G8 6 DIC. Gentle, soft sounds are tuned to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It’s nothing more than a distraction technique, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus disappears into the general noise and is no longer bothersome. This is a simple but effective tool and earns extra points from us.

An online contact with the audiologist through the app would be very useful. This is quite common today and helps with small adjustment problems. Unfortunately, Audio Service opts out of this and therefore does not earn any extra points.

If Audio Service had integrated motion sensors into this hearing aid, it could even enable individual health tracking. However, that is not the case here. These points are lost for the G8 6 DIC in the rating. The hearing aid also forgoes additional features such as special assistance systems, a fall alert, or language translators. This is not a major issue, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.

Rating Extras: 3,3

Conclusion: Audio Service G8 6 DIC

With a final grade of 3.36, this model holds its own in the mid-range. It has a fairly decent comfort equipment on board, which is sufficient for typical everyday moments and creates a satisfactory listening experience.
