The Phonak Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC in review

Durch die Einführung innovativer Technologien bei Phonak gelten diese Hörgeräte als überholt und erhalten entsprechend eine schlechtere Benotung.

This time we tested a miniature hearing aid about 1 cm long from the upper segment of the hearing aid prices. It is the Phonak Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC. It is worn in the ear and is designed for moderate, more severe, and changing hearing losses. The device owes its discreet, very deep position in the ear canal to its shape, which also provides a nice, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. From our experience in the hearing acoustics specialty store, we also know that hearing comfort is at least equally important. It’s about processing background noises in such a way that they do not hinder speech understanding, while still creating a natural sound picture. During the testing of the Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC, we were impressed by the excellent sound management. Let’s take a look at the individual features:

Of course, this Phonak device has noise reduction, as this is now standard. Noise reduction means that constant and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. Here, the disruptive noises can be adjusted in several stages, allowing you to decide how much attenuation is really comfortable.

Impulse sounds occur very often in everyday life. There’s the dishwasher that needs to be unloaded, or the bunch of keys that is placed on the table. The Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC features strong impulse sound management that makes these sounds bearable. The hearing comfort package also includes wind noise reduction. This works very reliably, and we wouldn't want to do without it anymore. For a precise, natural listening experience, the number of adjustable frequency bands is of great importance. With 20, this Phonak device is a true top model and allows for differentiated fine-tuning over several years. The special design of the Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC proves to be a boon when it comes to spatial hearing. The microphones are located deep in the ear canal, and that’s exactly where the sound reaches normal-hearing individuals. Spatial hearing does not need to be artificially recreated; it arises naturally.

Phonak does not yet utilize artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity

This Phonak model automatically activates most functions. However, it can sometimes be very useful to expand the range of functions a bit. In our test, we found out what options we have here. Often, there is a button on the hearing aid, but we did not find one on this model. Sometimes, this control element is omitted in favor of a smaller design. That's not too dramatic, as most functions in the hearing aid run automatically anyway. If desired, there is a remote control for the hearing aid. This allows you to easily adjust the volume. The operation is not only child’s play, but nobody will notice that you are currently adjusting your hearing aids.

We do not yet find the modern method of operation via voice command in the Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC. Another option to control the hearing aids is tap control. You simply tap your ear with your fingers, which then triggers a specific function. However, this possibility is not available in this Phonak device.

If you are looking for an app, unfortunately, you will not find one here. The Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC has to do without smart operating functions. This point is lost. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we are sorry to disappoint you, as a wireless module was unfortunately not integrated here.

Simplicity & security

We are also interested in how quickly one can get used to the Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC and how easy daily use is. Ideally, the hearing aid should work largely independently. The performance of the Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC is exceptionally good in this regard. It has a lot of typical hearing situations stored, which the device recognizes autonomously and always generates the appropriate setting. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then first wears a hearing aid, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not have to be turned up immediately. One can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost unnoticed, the amplification approaches the target level.

Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC relies on battery power instead of rechargeable batteries. Advantage: Very long runtime with one battery. Unlike rechargeable solutions, one has to worry about the power supply only very rarely. Disadvantage: Waste is generated in the form of used batteries. This hearing aid uses a hearing aid battery size 10.

The Virto Paradise 90 is nearly dust- and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras

Finally, we want to know if the hearing aid might offer any specials: Phonak has integrated a sound generator that plays soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

A nice feature would be a remote maintenance service, allowing the hearing professional to assist you even when you can't make it to the store. Unfortunately, this isn't available here, so there's no extra point for that.

Many hearing aids today still come with some health functions. However, since the Virto Paradise 90 Titanium IIC doesn't have any special sensors for that, we can't present any particular features here. This Phonak hearing aid has no additional lifestyle options. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but you don't need that for good hearing. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
