The Oticon Own 5 IIC in review

Could this hearing aid from Oticon's program be the right one for you? In our review of the Own 5 IIC, we have highlighted the most important aspects. Here we have a miniature hearing aid, about 1 cm long, from the lower mid-range that is worn in the ear. The optimal, very deep placement in the ear canal just before the eardrum lays the foundation for good hearing success, as the sound has only a very short distance to travel to the eardrum. This ensures that all sounds reach the desired location where we want them to be.

The Own 5 IIC provides sufficient amplification for nearly every hearing need.

Hearing comfort

First, we looked at the comfort features. The better they are, the easier and more pleasant the listening experience becomes. This hearing aid allows for solid comfort programming by the audiologist. The traditional noise suppression reduces uniform, insignificant sounds slightly. In the Own 5 IIC, it is only effective to a limited extent. Looking at the price, this could be quite suitable. This model can do without wind noise management. The hearing aid sits so deep in the ear canal that wind noises do not become an issue at all.

Unfortunately, a pulse sound absorber is not included in the Own 5 IIC. Tools for spatial hearing are missing here, yet we still give it full marks. Spatial hearing is preserved because the hearing aid sits directly in the ear canal. This is where sounds also reach those who do not wear hearing aids. This is a real advantage of this special, small design. With 12 frequency bands, one can already achieve quite good sound settings. A passionate musician might not be completely satisfied with this, but for normal hearing and sound needs, this number is perfectly adequate.

Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role in the signal processing here. The sound is analyzed not only based on typical frequency patterns. Especially in intense, noisy situations, this makes the experience feel more realistic and pleasant.

Operation & connectivity

Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond just the basic amplification function. Apps and other control options significantly expand the range of features, which is why we are also looking at this important topic with the Own 5 IIC from Oticon. We couldn't find a button, which is a pity. Let's continue looking. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – that loses a few points.

We are always excited when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. But that is currently not available in the Own 5 IIC. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches. However, we don't have that here at Oticon; it would have required very specific sensors.

Quickly increasing the volume via the app is unfortunately not possible with the Own 5 IIC. An app for that is not available. However, this is irrelevant if you are not a smartphone user anyway. There is no connectivity option to other audio sources here. It's a pity because a wireless streaming function would have offered real added value.

Rating Operation & connectivity: 3,8

Simplicity & security

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. This is about everyday practicality and the question of how easy and secure it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. When it comes to adjusting to changing hearing situations, we have to limit the Own 5 IIC to manual options. An automatic situation recognition feature would have definitely made life easier, but it is not available here. Some people struggle with getting used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a acclimatization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The period can last from a few weeks to several months, and it is individually adjustable. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice there has been a volume increase.

The IIC from Own 5 is powered by 10 disposable batteries, and it is not rechargeable. This has its pros and cons. For the decision "Rechargeable or battery," we have provided some help here: Rechargeable Hearing Aids or Batteries: 6 Criteria for Your Decision.

The Own 5 is nearly dust and water resistant and, with its IP 68 classification, certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: Are you among those suffering from tinnitus? Then you could use the optional tinnitus program in the Own 5 IIC. Soft, gentle sounds are tuned to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It’s nothing more than a distraction tactic, and it works remarkably well. The tinnitus disappears into the general noise and no longer annoys. This is a simple but effective tool and earns extra points from us.

What about remote maintenance? Such online services save a trip to the specialist store, as you can directly contact an audiology professional through the app. Unfortunately, we did not find anything like that for the Own 5 IIC. Too bad; it would have been a great additional tool.

Many hearing aids today still come with a few health functions. However, since the Own 5 IIC does not have any special sensors for that, we cannot present any special features here. Digital algorithms and suitable apps increasingly allow for the integration of lifestyle functions that support your daily life. We are impressed by what hearing aids like this from Oticon can do today. Be sure to try it out!
