The Philips HearLink 2030 IIC in review

Are you curious about this hearing aid from Philips? Let's see what we have found out. The HearLink 2030 IIC was designed for mild, moderate, and even severe hearing losses and is worn in the ear. It is a miniature hearing aid about 1 cm long at a moderate price.
Due to the optimal, very deep placement in the ear canal close to the eardrum, we achieve a good, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

The comfort features determine how pleasant hearing is perceived in everyday life. This hearing aid allows for solid comfort programming by a hearing care professional. A classic noise suppression is intended to reduce annoying background noises to a tolerable level. In the HearLink 2030 IIC, the effectiveness of the noise suppression exceeds the required minimum. However, the sounds will still be audible. There is no wind management here. This is perfectly fine since the direct placement in the ear canal provides a natural barrier against wind noise.

Points are deducted for the lack of impulse noise suppression. Normally, this dampens short, rattling sounds. But those who choose this hearing aid should not let this bother them. The HearLink 2030 IIC impresses us with its natural, spatial hearing. The ear shell retains its function, making the 3D sensation just like not wearing a hearing aid at all. The HearLink 2030 IIC has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly achieve a reasonable sound.

Interestingly, artificial intelligence also plays a role in signal processing here. Sound is not only analyzed based on typical frequency patterns. Particularly intense, noisy situations are perceived as more realistic and pleasant.

Rating Hearing comfort: 2,8

Operation & connectivity

How can one fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We have found out what access options are available with the HearLink 2030 IIC. Often, there is a button on the hearing aid, but we did not find one on this model. Sometimes, this control element is omitted in favor of a smaller design. This is not too dramatic since most functions in the hearing aid operate automatically anyway. Unfortunately, this hearing aid cannot be adjusted via a remote control – a few points are lost there.

The modern method of operation via voice command is not present in the HearLink 2030 IIC yet. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids still have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches. However, we do not have that here at Philips; certain sensors would have been needed for that.

An additional app for individual operation would be nice, but is currently not available for this hearing aid. A wireless connection to a smartphone or laptop is not possible as the necessary hardware components are missing. One should consider carefully whether they can do without this feature, but why not just give it a try.

Simplicity & security

Another point in our checklist is handling. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? Automatic environmental adjustment would certainly be helpful in daily life, but unfortunately, it is not provided in the HearLink 2030 IIC. Therefore, we have to rely on the manual adjustment options. Some people have difficulty getting used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to adapt to the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The duration can range from a few weeks to several months; it can be individually adjusted. The individual steps are so small that one does not even notice that there has been a volume increase.

The HearLink 2030 IIC is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from disposable size 10 batteries that need to be replaced every few days.

The hearing aid has been classified into IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily harm the hearing aid. Therefore, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities where it may get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and may ultimately cause damage.

Extras

Sometimes there are additional features in hearing aids that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this Philips device: For example, a tinnitus option would be interesting. Unfortunately, we did not find any way to alleviate tinnitus in the HearLink 2030 IIC.

In mobile times like these, a remote maintenance service via an app would be very helpful. This way, one could easily have a new hearing aid programming set up from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the HearLink 2030 IIC. For any changes, one still has to visit the specialist store.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Philips model lacks the sensors for this service. It would have also been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but they are not available in the HearLink 2030 IIC. Other hearing aids can score with speech translators or fall alarms, but here it remains with the usual range of functions.

Conclusion: Philips HearLink 2030 IIC

With a final grade of 3.31, this model holds its own in the mid-range. It has a fairly decent comfort feature set on board, which is sufficient for typical everyday moments and provides a satisfactory listening experience.
