Phonak is launching its Naida Marvel 30 SP, a conventional hearing aid from a solid mid-range price category. It is a small hearing aid for moderate to severe hearing needs and is worn behind the ear.
Hearing comfort
The hearing comfort determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. Therefore, we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model, which Phonak presents to us, we find only the absolutely necessary information regarding hearing comfort. Of course, noise suppression is integrated to mitigate stressful background noise. The Naida Marvel 30 SP features a rather simple form of noise suppression that should suffice for normal environments. However, users of the Naida Marvel 30 SP will have to contend with the wind sweeping over the microphones. There is no wind noise reduction available here.
A pulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Naida Marvel 30 SP. We miss a good spatial sound, but the automatic focus can be quite helpful in situations with multiple people. The 8 frequency channels are okay. However, it may be that the programming to meet individual hearing needs is not as precise, and one might have to make some audio compromises.
Phonak does not yet use artificial intelligence in this version.

How can you fully utilize the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We have found out what access options are available with the Naida Marvel 30 SP. For those who want to quickly and easily adjust the volume up or down, there is a button on the device. You can also select additional programs for special hearing situations through it. We do like the small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet small adjustments to the volume or sound.
We do not yet find the modern form of voice command operation in the Naida Marvel 30 SP. Besides buttons or remotes, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device switches modes. However, we do not have that here at Phonak; it would have required specific sensors for that.
Smartphone apps are now frequently offered to improve the operability of hearing aids. In our assessment, the Phonak app is among the better ones because it offers a good set of adjustment options. The Naida Marvel 30 comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over normally hearing individuals. We find that good and are happy to award points.

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. This is about practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to get through life with the hearing aid. Unfortunately, there is no powerful automatic situation adjustment in the Naida Marvel 30 SP. We have to make do with a few standard settings. Active hearing aid users will certainly encounter limitations here. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This makes adapting to the new sound significantly easier.
Unfortunately, the Naida Marvel 30 SP is not equipped with a battery, so regular size 13 batteries are needed for operation.
With an IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse influences. Dust cannot penetrate, it can withstand prolonged immersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

In conclusion, we want to know if the hearing aid perhaps offers any specials: We noticed the tinnitus option. If you like, you can set up a special tinnitus program. It creates a gentle noise to distract from the annoying tinnitus if needed. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.
We really like the remote adjustment feature. It is very helpful whenever you just want to change something small in the hearing aid settings but don't want to drive to the audiologist. Instead, you contact them via the app, and the hearing professional sends back a customized data package in the same way.
Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Phonak model lacks the sensors for this service. The hearing aid does without additional functions like specific assistance systems, a fall alert, or language translators. This is not a major issue, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.
