The Key 3 ITE-DW from ReSound is a traditionally sized hearing aid that is worn in the ear. By utilizing the ear as a cost-effective and comfortable wearing location, very good sound transmission is possible. The Key 3 ITE-DW is a hearing aid from the budget segment and is suitable for mild, moderate, and more severe hearing needs.
Hearing comfort
What is most bothersome for hearing aid wearers: Exactly, background noise. That’s why we first look at what comfort features the test device contains. The Key 3 ITE-DW offers only the absolute minimum in terms of hearing comfort. A standard noise suppression is definitely present. It is supposed to dampen consistent noises like street noise or the hum of an air conditioner. In our test device from ReSound, there is only a minimal basic reduction. A certain tolerance for noise should be expected from the hearing aid wearer here.
A filter for rattling or banging noises is not included – unfortunately, that’s a point against it. The Key 3 ITE-DW does have wind reduction, but it doesn't really help outdoors. Let’s briefly look at the equalizer: With 8 bands, it is not particularly flexible. With a few more channels, we would surely have achieved a nicer, more natural sound experience. But at least, we can reasonably adjust the sound to our hearing perception. We are far from having a 3D sound experience here. Only the switchable focus to the front offers some hearing support in social situations.
An exciting topic in hearing acoustics is the use of artificial intelligence, but this feature is not yet applied in this ReSound model.

Operation & connectivity
Almost everyone of us owns a smartphone, so it's natural to wonder if it can be connected to the new hearing aid. Let's take a look at the connectivity and usability of the Key 3 ITE-DW. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can adjust it in several stages to be louder or quieter. Additional programs for specific hearing situations can also be activated with it. If someone wants to do without the button, they can simply deactivate it. We do like small remote controls, and we found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.
In our test, we found no option for voice control. This feature is not absolutely necessary, but we would have appreciated it. If there are sensors in the hearing aid, a tap control could be conceivable, which would trigger a specific function by tapping your fingers on your ear. However, this option is not available in the Key 3 ITE-DW.
The best way to adjust the Key 3 ITE-DW is with the companion app. The first apps previously had just a single screen, but this one offers far more than just the usual volume control. We definitely give points for that. Problems with phone calls using the smartphone are a thing of the past with this device. Phone calls, music, and other sounds are completely transmitted wirelessly to the hearing aids. Headphones become unnecessary. We tested the wireless transmission during longer phone calls as well as for listening to music while exercising. Everything worked simply and smoothly. Only a compatible smartphone with 2.4 GHz wireless technology is needed.

Simplicity & security
Another point on our checklist is usability. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? The automatic situation recognition is supposed to make listening easier. However, the Key 3 ITE-DW struggles with changing or difficult acoustic environments, as it lacks some adaptive algorithms. Additionally, it is advisable to have a few extra hearing programs set for this device. The adjustment to the new hearing experience is supported by a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely balanced. I only need to do one thing: wear my hearing aids regularly.
The Key 3 ITE-DW is not rechargeable. It operates with hearing aid batteries size 13. Disadvantage: The batteries are disposed of after use. Advantage: Daily charging of batteries is eliminated; the hearing aid runs continuously for several days on a single battery.
With IP 68 certification, the hearing aid can withstand various adverse conditions. Dust cannot penetrate, it can endure prolonged submersion in water, and it is also protected against contact.

Sometimes there are additional functions in hearing aids that can be quite useful. Let's see how it is with this ReSound device: ReSound has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a scarce resource. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. If someone needs a new programming for their hearing aids, they can easily contact the audiologist through the app and describe their hearing preferences. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send a customized setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tried out immediately. This definitely deserves extra points in our test.
This Key 3 variant does not have sensors, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned – this hearing aid does not have this function onboard. This ReSound hearing aid does not have any other lifestyle options included. Elsewhere, there are voice assistants or reminder functions, but for good hearing, you don't need that. It would have just made the product a bit cooler.
