Here we take a look at a hearing aid from a solid mid-range price category that is worn behind the ear. It is called Insio 1 IX ITE and comes from the manufacturer Signia. It can be used by all people who have nearly all hearing needs and wish for a discreet hearing aid. Due to the cleverly chosen placement of the speaker in the ear canal, it has very good sound characteristics.
Signia brings the Signia IX platform to the entry-level segment as well, but in a significantly stripped-down version.
Hearing comfort
We all agree that speech comprehension is the most important task of hearing aids. From our experience in the hearing aid specialty store, we also know that hearing comfort is at least as important. It's about processing background noises so that they do not restrict speech comprehension, while still creating a natural sound experience. In the test of the Insio 1 IX ITE, we find only the bare essentials regarding hearing comfort. Let's take a look at the individual features:
Of course, this Signia device includes noise suppression, as it has become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. Here we do have noise reduction, but it doesn't work very strongly and is not adjustable further.
The impulse sound management in this device is not really recommendable. Short, loud noises still sound quite harsh. For active outdoor fans, we find a wind noise management always useful. Although it is included in this device, it is not very effective. You cannot adjust it individually either. With 8 frequency bands, we are not entirely satisfied in the ITE, but it should suffice for uncomplicated hearing curves. The sound is probably not completely natural with that. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not very advanced either. The hearing aids can focus forward, but this does not help when trying to determine from which direction a car is approaching or where someone is calling from.
An additional tool to improve hearing comfort can be found in the Signia app. There, artificial intelligence leverages the preferences of thousands of other hearing aid users to generate a tailored setting for a specific hearing situation.

Operation & connectivity
Most functions are activated automatically by this Signia model. However, it can be very useful to have the ability to expand the range of functions a bit. In our testing, we found out what options we have here. There is usually a button on the hearing aid, and we found one on the Insio 1 IX as well. It can be configured as a volume control or program selection button and can also be disabled if desired. A remote control is available for the Insio 1 IX ITE. It is quite practical, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume option as well as various hearing programs.
In our tests, we did not find any option for voice control. This function is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Besides buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and then the device switches. However, we don't have that here at Signia; it would have required specific sensors.
The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app is not one of our favorites, it is still a helpful addition to the Insio 1 IX ITE. The Insio 1 IX comes with a 2.4 GHz antenna and allows us to enjoy binaural phone calls. This even gives us an advantage over people with normal hearing. We think that’s great and gladly give points for it.

No matter how great the hearing aid sounds: nothing is more unpleasant than a product that constantly presents hurdles in our everyday life. Therefore, simplicity and safety are very important topics in our hearing aid tests: When it comes to ease of hearing, we make no compromises. We expect the hearing aid to function automatically in the background and not force us to constantly press various buttons. We are somewhat disappointed with the Insio 1 IX ITE. Only basic situations are recognized automatically. This means that we cannot really get by without manual operation options. Very important to us in terms of simplicity is the support during the acclimatization process. Especially after hearing poorly for years, it can sometimes be difficult to perceive everything at a natural volume. Our test device has an acclimatization manager that helps us through the adjustment phase with very small volume changes. After a few weeks or months, we have reached the calculated amplification level.
Insio 1 IX ITE is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so it is not rechargeable. It is powered by a hearing aid battery of size 312. It needs to be replaced every few days.
The data sheet certifies the Signia device with an IP protection class rating of 68. This makes it one of the most resilient hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing, as long as it is not submerged deeper than 1.5 meters. However, be careful. Shampoo, for example, changes the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. In everyday life, however, you can behave completely carefree.

Now we have looked at the most important features of the hearing aid. But before we come to the end, we want to know if there are any additional features: Signia has integrated a noise generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.
A clever tool is the integrated remote maintenance service. Almost everyone has a smartphone, and time is a precious commodity. Therefore, such a remote maintenance service is absolutely appropriate. Anyone who needs a new programming of their hearing aids can easily contact the acoustician via the app and describe their hearing wishes. Through a cloud service, the professional can then send an individual setting as a data package to the app. From there, it is loaded onto the hearing aid and can be tried out immediately. This definitely earns extra points in our test.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track some personal health data, for example. However, the Insio 1 IX ITE does not offer this. Other hearing aids already have some expanded options like a fall alarm or reminder functions. We don’t find this here, and that’s not too dramatic because the normal hearing functions are still the most important.
