Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the lower mid-range, designed to be worn in the ear. It is called Insio 2 IX IIC and comes from the manufacturer Signia. It can be used by anyone with mild to moderate hearing loss who desires a very delicate miniature hearing aid. Due to its precise placement directly in the ear canal, it has very good sound properties.

Hearing comfort

We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. From our experience in the hearing acoustics retail business, we also know that listening comfort is at least equally important. It's about processing background noise in such a way that it does not restrict speech understanding, while still creating a natural sound image. In testing the Insio 2 IX IIC, we found only limited possibilities for influencing comfort. Let’s take a look at the individual features:

Of course, this Signia device has noise suppression, as that has become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. We should not expect too much here. Speech and noises are quite close together in this regard. But in acoustically simple situations, it should suffice.

The impulse sound management is relatively simple; it dampens short loud sounds a little, which is okay. The Insio 2 IX IIC does have wind reduction, but it doesn’t really do much outdoors. With 12 frequency bands, a pretty good sound can be set. A passionate musician may not be completely satisfied with this, but for normal hearing and sound needs, this number is more than sufficient. Spatial hearing with the Insio 2 IX IIC happens very naturally. Due to the special placement deep in the ear canal, the function of the outer ear is preserved, and there is no loss in directional hearing.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that process data very successfully with the help of artificial intelligence, but that is not yet the case with this device.

Operation & connectivity

The majority of hearing aids automatically adapt to their environment. However, it is sometimes very practical to be able to make some changes yourself. After all, the hearing aid does not know how you are currently feeling. We looked at the control options offered by the Insio 2 IX IIC: First, we are interested in whether there is a button on the device. Unfortunately, with the IIC, we are disappointed; there is no immediate adjustment option. Those who do not like to touch their ears to adjust the volume will be pleased with the optional remote control. This allows you to make changes to the hearing aid comfortably and discreetly.

We do not find the modern form of voice command control in the Insio 2 IX IIC yet. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without needing to press a button. However, this feature is not yet implemented here.

In the App Store, we found an app from Signia for the Insio 2 IX IIC. However, the app does not look very promising. We could not discover more than the basic functions. A connection option to other audio sources is not provided here. It's a pity, because a wireless streaming function would have offered real value.

Simplicity & security

Now let's briefly talk about everyday usability. Is the Insio 2 IX IIC user-friendly and easy to handle? Does it have water protection? Here are our findings: When it comes to simplicity in hearing, we make no compromises. We expect the hearing aid to function fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press any buttons. We are somewhat disappointed with the Insio 2 IX IIC in this regard. Only the basic situations are recognized automatically. This means that we cannot really do without manual operation options. Some people have difficulty adjusting, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to cope with the new volume. There is a familiarization manager that gradually leads us to the required target amplification. The duration can range from a few weeks to several months, and that can be adjusted individually. The individual steps are so small that you hardly notice that there has been an increase in volume.

We regret that the Insio 2 IX IIC does not have a rechargeable battery, but is powered by hearing aid batteries size 10. This is not particularly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it runs for a longer time on a single battery.

We had a carefree everyday experience during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then took out the hearing aids with wet hands - all no problem. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

We all like goodies, so let's take a final look at the extras that might be hidden in the hearing aid. Are you among those suffering from tinnitus? Then you might use the optional tinnitus program in the Insio 2 IX IIC. Quiet, gentle sounds are tailored to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It’s nothing more than a distraction maneuver, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus fades into the general noise and is no longer annoying. It's a simple but effective tool and gets extra points from us.

What about remote maintenance? Such online services save a visit to the specialist shop because you can contact an acoustic professional directly through the app. Unfortunately, we did not find such a service for the Insio 2 IX IIC. Too bad, it would have been a great additional tool.

There are no sensors in this Insio 2 IX variant, so popular health tracking cannot be offered either. For example, daily steps are counted. As mentioned - this hearing aid does not have this function on board. It would have been nice to have some lifestyle features, but they are not available in the Insio 2 IX IIC. Other hearing aids can impress with a speech translator or fall alarm, but here it remains within the usual range of functions.
