The Starkey Signature Series 24 IIC NW in review

We are once again in the test lab, and this time we had a product from Starkey in our hands or rather on our ear. The full product name is Signature Series 24 IIC NW, and it is classified among the premium category devices. Due to its perfect, very deep placement in the ear canal, it has good acoustic properties. The Signature Series 24 IIC NW is worn in the ear, and it is a truly very small hearing aid for both mild and more severe hearing needs.

Hearing comfort

What is most annoying for hearing aid users? Exactly, background noise. That's why we first look at the comfort features of the test device. With the Signature Series 24 IIC NW, we were impressed by the excellent sound management. A normal noise suppression is definitely present. It is designed to dampen consistent noises like street noise or the hum of the air conditioning. In our test device from Starkey, it really does that, and much more effectively than in most other hearing aids.

Crackling, metallic sounds have no chance in this hearing aid; they are significantly reduced with a multi-stage tool. Starkey is sure to impress all outdoor enthusiasts with this device, as wind is not only pleasantly dampened, but speech understanding should also continue to function smoothly. With 24 channels, the frequency band count in the Signature Series 24 IIC NW is very high. This allows the hearing aid to be perfectly adjusted to every hearing profile and also offers good long-term tuning options. Tools for spatial hearing are missing here, yet we give full marks. The spatial hearing remains intact because the hearing aid sits directly in the ear canal. And it is precisely there that sound reaches even for non-hearing aid users. This is a real advantage of this special, small design.

By the way, you might find that with this Starkey device, the sound is perceived as clearer and more natural, especially in noisy situations. This is likely due to the implemented artificial intelligence. The hearing aid has already been fed with millions of real sounds, which leads to a significantly improved distinction between speech and noise.

Operation & connectivity

Although hearing aids are now very intelligent, they still cannot read the thoughts of the hearing aid wearer. Therefore, the automation sometimes reaches its limits. Individual adjustment options can be really useful, so let's briefly look at the options available with the Signature Series 24 IIC NW: We searched in vain for a button as a quick access option. It has likely fallen victim to the small format. This is manageable since most settings are anyway made automatically by the hearing aid. We would have liked a remote control, but Starkey does not offer one for this model. So no points in this regard.

For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or softer via voice commands. The idea is really good, but Starkey has not yet reached that point with this device. Don't worry, this feature would be nice but is dispensable. There is no control of the hearing aids with a simple finger tap in this Starkey model because specific sensors in the housing would have been necessary for that.

The Signature Series 24 IIC NW can be operated with an app. In our view, it is somewhat rudimentary, but you will definitely benefit from the convenience of use. Unfortunately, we have to do without a streaming function here and continue to hold the smartphone normally to the ear.

Simplicity & security

Continuing with the test: How does it stand with usability? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? With top-class situational recognition, we were completely convinced by the Signature Series 24 IIC NW. The hearing aid seamlessly adapts to the acoustic environment and almost never requires our intervention. Hearing feels completely normal. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is finally reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new auditory impressions.

The IIC NW from Signature Series 24 is powered by 10 disposable batteries; it is not rechargeable. This has its pros and cons. For the decision between "rechargeable or battery," we have provided a guide here: Rechargeable hearing aids or batteries: 6 criteria for your decision.

The data sheet certifies the Starkey device with an IP protection class rating of 68. This makes it one of the most durable hearing aids on the market. Dust has no chance, and water does not penetrate the housing as long as it does not submerge deeper than 1.5 m. Nevertheless, be cautious. Shampoo, for example, alters the surface tension of water. You should also avoid saltwater. However, in daily life, you can behave completely carefree.

Rating Simplicity & security: 1,4

Extras

We all love goodies, so let's take a look at the extras that may be hidden in the hearing aid. We really liked the optional tinnitus program. There are relatively many people who are occasionally or frequently troubled by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Signature Series 24 IIC NW is basically just a sound generator. It’s about creating broad-spectrum noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus fades into the background and is no longer perceived as annoying.

Unfortunately, there is no option for remote adjustments. So, anyone who needs optimization and wants to change their hearing aid settings cannot avoid a visit to the audiologist.

There are no sensors in this Signature Series 24 variant, so the popular health tracking cannot be offered. For example, steps are counted throughout the day. As mentioned, this hearing aid does not have that feature on board. The device from Starkey focuses on the essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation functions. While that would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good hearing experience.

Rating Extras: 3,3
