Here we take a look at a hearing aid from the more affordable price range that is worn in the ear. It is called B Insera 1 10 NW O and is produced by the manufacturer Unitron. It can be used by anyone with mild to moderate hearing loss who desires a lightweight, barely visible and noticeable hearing aid. Due to its discreet placement in the ear canal, it has very good sound properties.

Hearing comfort

First, we looked at the comfort features. The better these are, the easier and more pleasant the listening experience. This hearing aid allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. The traditional noise suppression reduces uniform, unimportant sounds slightly. The manufacturer has integrated standard noise suppression in the B Insera 1 10 NW O. It is active in the background but cannot be further adjusted. Some hearing aids reach their limits when the wind sweeps over the microphones outside. That can get quite loud. However, Unitron has something to counteract this, namely a highly effective, adjustable wind noise suppression. It works very well and helps those who enjoy being outdoors.

Once you've experienced impulse sound suppression in a hearing aid, you don't want to give it up. The B Insera 1 10 NW O has such a feature and can therefore handle all short and intense sound events quite effortlessly. This includes things like dishes clattering in the kitchen or footsteps on a hard floor. Hearing aids like the B Insera 1 10 NW O maintain the natural spatial perception we have experienced since childhood. The function of the outer ear, head size, and head shadow effects—these parameters create a true, authentic 3D hearing experience. The B Insera 1 10 NW O has 12 adjustable frequency bands, placing it in the mid-range. A good acoustician can certainly bring out a decent sound.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that very successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device does not integrate that yet.

Operation & connectivity

„Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when selecting a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connection options. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer wishes. The use is, of course, optional. A remote control is available for the B Insera 1 10 NW O. It's quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume control option as well as various hearing programs.

In the test, we found no option for voice control. This function isn’t necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Tap Control would also have been an interesting feature. With this, you can change the function with a quick tap on the ear. However, this is not available in the B Insera 1 10 NW O yet.

An additional app for individual controls would be nice, but it is not currently offered for this hearing aid. The hearing aid can also be used as a headset with a small additional device. If you clip this to your collar, the entire multimedia world is open to you. Smartphone, tablet, laptop – all Bluetooth-enabled devices can be connected wirelessly to the hearing aid.

Simplicity & security

Let's continue with the test: How is the user-friendliness? Is it easy or complicated to handle the hearing aid? We would have wished for an automatic program in the B Insera 1 10 NW O that adapts to the environment by itself. However, that is not available, so unfortunately we have to deduct points at this point. The integrated acclimatization manager can be of great help when entering the world of hearing aids. Its task is to gradually increase the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until the target volume is reached. This allows you to gradually get used to the new hearing impressions in a relaxed manner. Unfortunately, the B Insera 1 10 NW O is not equipped with a rechargeable battery, so regular size 10 batteries are needed for operation.

We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and discover in the datasheet the protection class IP 68. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged immersion. It also includes protection against contact.

Extras

At the end of our test report, there is still a bit of space for the extra features: Worth mentioning is the tinnitus program. Those plagued by bothersome ear noises will benefit from it. Pleasant, soft sounds are adjusted to gently surround the tinnitus. In the end, the tinnitus fades into the background noise and is no longer disturbing at all.

Unitron keeps up with the times and offers a future-oriented feature with the remote adjustment service. Working people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer commute to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.

Some hearing aids can track certain health data. However, this requires special sensors in the hearing aid, which we unfortunately do not have in the B Insera 1 10 NW O. The functionality of the B Insera 1 10 NW O is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional features like fall alerts or Siri connections provide a decent added value but are not relevant for good hearing balance.

With a final grade of 3.31, this model holds its ground in the middle range. It comes with a fairly decent comfort package that is sufficient for typical everyday moments and creates a satisfying listening experience.
