We will take a look at a hearing aid, like the ones from the past, for mild, moderate, and more severe hearing needs: This model is called B Stride 3 P R and comes from the company Unitron. It is worn behind the ear, and it is a reasonably sized hearing aid. The B Stride 3 P R is a model from the affordable segment. Let's see if the price classification is justified.

Hearing comfort

A good speech understanding is a given in modern hearing aids. Equally important is the hearing comfort. Only if the ratio of speech transmission to the level of background noise is right will the hearing be perceived as pleasant. Therefore, we take a look at the comfort features: The B Stride 3 P R allows for solid comfort programming by the hearing care professional. Normal ambient sounds like street noise, vacuum cleaner noise, or sounds from fans should be dampened by a classic noise suppression. In this Unitron hearing aid, the manufacturer has integrated standard noise suppression. It is active in the background but cannot be further adjusted.

Bangings and metallic noises have no chance in this hearing aid; they are significantly muted using a multi-stage tool. Wind can greatly limit hearing comfort outdoors when it blows across the microphones. However, the B Stride 3 P R has an efficient wind noise suppression integrated. It works really well and will delight those who enjoy being outside. It can be adjusted in several stages to suit individual needs. We cannot produce a true 3D surround sound with the current test device. Especially outdoors, it is advisable to look around often to locate individual sound sources. However, focusing on a specific speaker works quite well with the integrated directional microphones. A few more frequency channels would be desirable, but the existing 12 channels are already quite effective.

Unitron has not yet incorporated artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there maybe an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the operation and connectivity options. There is a button directly on the hearing aid. With it, you can change the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed to the customer's preferences. Of course, its use is optional. A discreet way to change the hearing aid is the remote control. It fits in any pocket. If the person you're talking to is speaking too quietly again, just one or two clicks are enough to adjust the volume. Additional hearing programs for listening to music or driving can also be activated with the remote control.

Sometimes it is simply impractical to take out the smartphone or remote control. Here, voice control proves to be a clever alternative. Even with limited dexterity, operating by voice command can be a real help. We were quite impressed with the tap control during testing. Just tap your ear briefly, and your Unitron hearing aid knows it needs to do something. We were already familiar with this sensor-controlled technology from wireless headphones, and it's great that it's now available in hearing aids too.

It is very convenient to adjust the hearing aids via the app. There is also a free app for the B Stride 3 P R. In our opinion, the range of functions is mediocre, but usually sufficient. It’s best to try it out in demo mode beforehand. One of the best features of the hearing aid is the direct streaming function. This turns the hearing aid into a TrueWireless headphone, receiving phone calls and other sounds directly in the ear. The prerequisite is a compatible smartphone that uses 2.4 GHz technology. The biggest advantage is that you can hear phone calls not just in one ear, but in both. Additionally, the sound can be tailored to personal needs.

Ein wichtiger Faktor für die Akzeptanz eines Hörgerätes ist die Alltagstauglichkeit. Dabei geht es z.B. um automatisierte Funktionen oder auch um Robustheit und Benutzerfreundlichkeit. Von der Programmautomatik im B Stride 3 P R bekommen wir relativ wenig Unterstützung. Ohne ein paar individuelle Hörprogramme wird man vermutlich in einem lebendigen Alltag nicht auskommen. Ein tolles Goodie in diesem Hörgerät ist die automatische Akklimatisierung. Gerade wenn man schon länger schlecht hört und dann erstmals ein Hörgerät trägt, ist das eine enorme Erleichterung. Die Lautstärke muss damit nämlich nicht sofort voll angehoben werden. Man kann zunächst auf einem geringeren Level starten, und ganz allmählich und fast unbemerkt nähert sich die Verstärkung dem Ziel an.

Zur einfachen Handhabung im Alltag gehört auf jeden Fall auch die Energieversorgung. Das B Stride 3 P R hat einen integrierten Akku und ist immer wieder aufladbar. Da eine Ladung auf jeden Fall für den ganzen Tag reicht, müssen wir keine Sorge haben, dass mitten Im Gespräch der Akku leer wird.

Das Datenblatt bescheinigt dem Unitron-Gerät eine Zertifizierung nach IP-Schutzklasse 68. Damit gehört es zu den widerstandsfähigsten Hörgeräten am Markt. Staub hat keine Chance, und auch Wasser dringt nicht ins Gehäuse ein, sofern es nicht tiefer als 1,5 m untertaucht. Seien Sie trotzdem vorsichtig. Shampoo z.B. verändert die Oberflächenspannung des Wassers. Auch Salzwasser sollten Sie vermeiden. Im Alltag jedoch können Sie sich ganz unbeschwert verhalten.

Am Ende unseres Testberichtes gibt es noch ein bisschen Platz für die Extra-Features: Ein spezielles Tinnitusprogramm ist im B Stride 3 P R auf Wunsch programmierbar. Damit können stimulierende, angenehme Geräusche generiert werden, die vom Tinnitus ablenken, wenn er mal wieder besonders stark ist. Das finden wir sehr nützlich und vergeben gerne Extrapunkte.

Ein cleveres Tool ist der integrierte Fernwartungsservice. Fast jeder hat ein Smartphone, und Zeit ist ein knappes Gut. Deshalb ist so ein Fernwartungsservice absolut angemessen. Wer eine neue Programmierung seiner Hörgeräte benötigt, kann ganz einfach über die App Kontakt zum Akustiker aufnehmen und seine Hörwünsche beschreiben. Über einen Cloud-Service kann der Profi dann eine individuelle Einstellung als Datenpaket in die App schicken. Von dort wird sie aufs Hörgerät geladen und kann sofort ausprobiert werden. Das verdient auf jeden Fall Extrapunkte in unserem Test. 

Manche Hörgeräte können bestimmte Gesundheitsdaten tracken. Allerdings braucht es dazu spezielle Sensoren im Hörgerät, die wir beim B Stride 3 P R leider nicht haben.  Jetzt wäre es noch schön gewesen, ein paar Lifestyle-Funktionen zu haben, aber die gibt es im B Stride 3 P R nicht. Andere Hörgeräte können mit Sprachübersetzer oder Sturzalarm punkten, aber hier bleibt es beim üblichen Funktionsumfang.

Mit der Endnote 2,83 behauptet sich dieses Modell im mittleren Bereich. Es hat eine ganz passable Komfortausstattung mit an Bord, die für die typischen Alltagsmomente reicht und ein zufriedenstellendes Hörerlebnis schafft.
