Unitron introduces its T Max 600 UP, a conventional hearing aid from the basic class. It is a normally sized hearing aid for moderate to severe hearing needs and is worn behind the ear.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noise does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we found only limited options for influencing comfort. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It is designed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point where they are not so prominent anymore. For the T Max 600 UP, a stronger noise reduction would be desirable, but that is reserved for higher-quality hearing aids.

A somewhat stronger wind reduction would be nice, but the one in the T Max 600 UP is livable. The noise filter in this hearing aid is quite solid and practical for daily use. We also take a look at the number of equalizer bands: the device from Unitron has 10. We're not really happy with that; the options for sound customization are quite limited. However, it's sufficient for good speech understanding. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not very developed. While the hearing aids can focus forward, it doesn't help much if you want to determine from which direction a car is approaching or where someone is calling from.

Other hearing aids are already using artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is still not present in the T Max 600 UP.

Operation & connectivity

How can you fully leverage the potential of hearing aids in everyday life? We found out what options are available with the T Max 600 UP. First, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This makes a lot of sense, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make a change. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If you prefer not to adjust anything directly at your ear, you can of course deactivate the button. Those who don’t like to touch their ear to increase the volume will appreciate the optional remote control. This allows for comfortable and discreet adjustments to the hearing aid.

We are always excited when a hearing aid surprises us with a great additional feature. For example, we would have liked to see voice control at this point. However, this is not available in the T Max 600 UP at present. In addition to buttons or remote controls, some hearing aids also have a tap control feature. This means you can simply tap your ear briefly, and the device changes settings. However, we don’t have this here at Unitron; it would have required very specific sensors.

If you are hoping for an app, unfortunately, you will not find one here. The T Max 600 UP has to go without smart control functions. That point is lost. A very special comfort feature is the wireless connectivity in the hearing aid. You only need a small additional device, and you can start streaming sounds from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop directly to the hearing aids. Since mobile devices often have only mediocre speaker quality, this streaming function is a real advantage. The additional device is called a streamer. It is a small, slim gadget that can be worn around the neck or clipped to the collar. It contains a powerful battery and a Bluetooth interface.

Simplicity & security

Another point on our checklist is handling. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe usage in everyday life? When it comes to ease of hearing, we make no compromises. We expect the hearing aid to function fully automatically in the background and not require us to constantly press buttons. With the T Max 600 UP, we are somewhat disappointed. Only basic situations are recognized automatically. This means we cannot truly manage without manual operation options. A great feature of this hearing aid is the automatic acclimatization. Especially when someone has been hearing poorly for a long time and then wears a hearing aid for the first time, this is a tremendous relief. The volume does not have to be turned all the way up immediately. One can start at a lower level, and gradually and almost imperceptibly, the amplification approaches the target.

Unfortunately, the T Max 600 UP is not equipped with a battery, so you need to regularly use size 675 batteries for operation.

We had a carefree everyday life during our test due to the IP-68 certification. This indicates that the hearing aid is particularly well protected against dust and water. We marched through the rain and then removed the hearing aids with wet hands – no problem at all. However, the water resistance really only applies to fresh, natural water and not to foamy bathwater or saltwater.

Extras

Finally, let's take a brief look at whether there are any extras: Unitron has integrated a sound generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

Online services are becoming increasingly standard. There is often a remote maintenance service for hearing aids as well. However, Unitron has not provided such a service for its T Max 600 UP. This means you have to go to the specialist shop every time you want to have your hearing aid reprogrammed. No extra point for that.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Unitron model lacks the sensors for this service. The functionality of the T Max 600 UP is limited to normal hearing, which is perfectly fine. Additional functions like fall alert or Siri integrations offer a decent added value, but they are not relevant for achieving good hearing balance.
