The Widex Magnify 60 RIC 10 in review

Are you curious about this hearing aid from Widex? Let's see what we have found out. The Magnify 60 RIC 10 was designed for moderate, more severe, and changing hearing losses, and it is worn behind the ear. It is a very delicate miniature hearing aid from the low-budget range.
By the clever decision to place the speaker directly in the ear canal, we achieve good, clear sound.

Hearing comfort

In the hearing comfort section, we look at how a hearing aid handles all the background noise. Comfortable noise management greatly contributes to a user liking their hearing aids and wearing them regularly. With this Widex device, we find only the bare minimum regarding hearing comfort. Regular noise suppression aims to dampen uniform, rumbling background noises. This works only to a limited extent in the Magnify 60 RIC 10. It doesn't offer more than very basic noise suppression.

A so-called bang filter would have been nice; it would have made the clattering when emptying the dishwasher a bit more bearable. But we have to do without that in the Magnify 60 RIC 10. When the wind sweeps over the microphones outdoors, we wish for wind noise reduction. However, this is missing here, and in some outdoor situations, it can significantly impair hearing comfort. We cannot create true 3D sound with the current test device. Especially outdoors, one should frequently look around to locate individual sound sources. However, focusing on a specific speaker works quite well with the integrated directional microphones. The adjustment options in the equalizer are rather coarse. The frequency response is divided into 6 segments. Within these individual areas, nothing can be changed further. This could lead to some sound weaknesses in the Magnify 60 RIC 10, and the separation of speech and background noise is not as successful as we would like it to be.

Widex does not yet use artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity

Digital hearing aids have long evolved beyond the basic amplification function. Apps and other control options significantly expand their functionality, which is why we’re also looking into this important topic with the Magnify 60 RIC 10 by Widex. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a button, which is a shame. Let’s continue checking. A remote control is available for the Magnify 60 RIC 10. It’s quite handy, fits in your pocket, and offers a volume control option as well as various hearing programs.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Widex unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical for those whose fingers aren't very mobile or for those who simply enjoy smart gadgets. Some hearing aids can also be operated with a quick tap of the finger, without the need to press an extra button. However, this feature is not yet implemented here.

An app for individual control is available free of charge. However, we only find normal functions here which are useful, but the app isn't really enjoyable to use. A small, convenient accessory tool makes the model streaming-capable and connects it not only to the smartphone but also to the tablet or the hands-free system in the car.

Simplicity & security

Usability is the next aspect we want to address. This involves practicality and the question of how easy and safe it is to live with the hearing aid. An automatic environmental adjustment would certainly be helpful in everyday life, but unfortunately, it is not offered in the Magnify 60 RIC 10. Therefore, we have to rely on the manual adjustment options. We are very pleased with the integrated acclimatization manager. It gradually increases the volume of the hearing aid in tiny steps until our target amplification is eventually reached. We can relax and gradually get used to the new listening experiences.

We regret that the Magnify 60 RIC 10 does not have a rechargeable battery, but instead operates on hearing aid batteries size 10. This is not particularly problematic, but one should remember to carry spare batteries. On the other hand, this hearing aid does not need to be charged daily; it can run for a long time on a single battery.

We also take a look at the robustness of the housing and discover in the data sheet the protection class IP 68. This means that no dust can penetrate, and water only becomes dangerous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Extras

Finally, let's take a quick look at whether there are any extras: We noticed the tinnitus option. Those who wish can have a special tinnitus program set up. It can add a gentle noise to the ears if needed, to distract a little from the annoying tinnitus. The sounds can be tailored to personal hearing preferences.

A significant added benefit comes from the remote maintenance service. Through the app, you can contact your hearing care professional and describe your hearing problem. They can adjust the settings accordingly and upload them to the hearing aids via the app. For people with little time or a long commute, this is a fantastic service.

Tracking health data is a real added value in modern hearing aids. However, this Widex model lacks the sensors for this service. It would have been nice to have a few lifestyle features, but they are not available in the Magnify 60 RIC 10. Other hearing aids can score points with language translators or fall alerts, but here it remains within the usual functional range.

Conclusion: Widex Magnify 60 RIC 10

This test device ranks in the lower positions overall and lacks some features. We award a grade of 3.73. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
