This test report is about the Entra A 2 MNR. It was developed by Bernafon and covers light, moderate, and severe hearing needs. This variant is worn behind the ear. Entra A 2 MNR is a small, sleek hearing aid from the entry-level class. We achieve clean sound transmission through the deep placement of the speaker in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

First, we assess the hearing comfort features. What types of noises does the hearing aid recognize? How does it handle them? Is the hearing aid suitable for a varied daily life? Here with this test device, we find only the absolute essentials regarding hearing comfort. As in all hearing aids, we also find the typical background noise suppression here. It is designed to reduce monotonous, noisy ambient sounds to the point where they are not as prominent. The Entra A 2 MNR includes only a very slight noise reduction.

The device from Bernafon can also detect wind noises, but only a minimal noise reduction follows. This is sufficient for normal daily activities, but true outdoor enthusiasts will not be satisfied with it. There is also supposed to be an impulse sound filter implemented. It dampens short, clattering noises very little, so it isn’t really helpful. We also take a look at the number of equalizer bands: the Bernafon device has 10. We are not really happy with that; the options for sound shaping are quite limited. However, it is enough for good speech understanding. Spatial hearing would still be an important aspect, but not much can be said about that for this Bernafon hearing aid. There are no special functions that could support or replicate spatial hearing in any way. This is something to consider, especially if one frequently spends time outdoors in public spaces.

Bernafon does not yet use artificial intelligence in this version.

Operation & connectivity

Every person has their own unique hearing needs. It's beneficial if one can customize their hearing aids beyond the automatic functions. In our test, we discovered the following access options: There's a button directly on the hearing aid. This allows you to adjust the volume or activate additional hearing programs. It can be programmed according to customer preferences. Of course, using it is optional. A remote control for the hearing aid is available upon request. With this, the volume can be easily controlled. The handling is not only child’s play, but no one will notice that you are adjusting your hearing aids.

Some hearing aids can already be controlled by voice, but this one from Bernafon unfortunately cannot yet. It would be practical for those whose fingers are not as mobile or for those who simply like smart gadgets. Tap Control would have also been an interesting feature. With that, you could change the function with a simple tap on the ear. But that's not available in the Entra A 2 MNR yet.

The app is definitely very useful. Anyone with a smartphone should download it. Even though the app isn't one of our favorites, it is still a useful addition to the Entra A 2 MNR. We really enjoyed the direct, wireless streaming. This means that calls from the smartphone can be transmitted to the hearing aids without any additional accessories. This turns the hearing aid into a perfect hands-free system or a wireless headphone. Listening to music or watching and hearing videos is incredibly comfortable.

How do you manage with a hearing aid in everyday life? This is the next aspect we will assess. Only when such a device functions easily and uncomplicated can one become friends with it. The first points in the chapter on simplicity are where the Entra A 2 MNR falls short, as it does not have automatic situational adjustments. We have to manually adjust until we cope with the respective hearing situation. Some people find it difficult to get used to it, but this hearing aid makes it easy for us to adjust to the new volume. There is an acclimatization manager that gradually introduces us to the required target amplification. The duration can range from a few weeks to several months, and this is individually adjustable. The increments are so small that you hardly notice there was an increase in volume.

The Entra A 2 MNR is not rechargeable; it operates on hearing aid batteries. Unlike rechargeable batteries, it does not need to be charged daily, but the size 312 battery will need to be replaced every few days.

The hearing aid has been classified under IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against dust ingress. Water also cannot easily damage the hearing aid. Thus, it is well equipped for outdoor activities, where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not necessarily go swimming or bathing with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can change the composition and ultimately cause damage.

Sometimes hearing aids come with additional features that can be quite useful. Let's see what this Bernafon device has to offer: Are you among those troubled by tinnitus? Then you might use the optional tinnitus program in the Entra A 2 MNR. Soft, gentle sounds are tuned to your hearing and engage all areas of the inner ear. It's nothing more than a distraction technique, and it works surprisingly well. The tinnitus disappears into the general noise and is no longer bothersome. This is a simple yet effective tool, earning extra points from us.

A true added value is the remote maintenance service. To change the hearing aid settings, there is no longer a need to go to the specialized shop; instead, you can directly contact the audiologist via the app. Through a cloud service, you can then load the new data package into the hearing aids. This is exactly what we expect from a modern hearing aid.

There are no sensors in this Entra A 2 variant, so the popular health tracking feature cannot be offered. For example, steps can be counted throughout the day. As mentioned, this hearing aid does not have this function onboard. Additionally, there are a few lifestyle features that make your hearing aid a smart assistant. Connect with voice assistants like Siri, or discover what else the app has to offer. While this may not have much to do with actual hearing, it can be extremely useful.
