The Oticon Jet 1 CIC in review

In diesen Geräten wird mit einer Technik gearbeitet, die wir als bereits veraltet bewerten. Daher versehen wir sie mit einem Abschlag in der Gesamtnote.

This test report is about the Jet 1 CIC. It was developed by Oticon and addresses mild, moderate, and also severe hearing losses. This variant is worn in the ear. The Jet 1 CIC is a discreet, slim-shaped hearing aid from the entry-level class. We achieve clear sound transmission through the precise placement directly in the ear canal.

Hearing comfort

First, we looked at the comfort features. The better they are, the easier and more pleasant the hearing experience becomes. In this hearing aid, we found only a few options for comfort enhancement. The traditional noise suppression helps to lower uniform, unimportant sounds a little. In the Jet 1 CIC, the standard noise suppression is integrated by the manufacturer. It is active in the background but cannot be further adjusted. A decent wind management system helps to suppress small turbulence at the hearing aid microphones. This function is essential for all outdoor enthusiasts.

Our test discovered impulse sound attenuation. It slightly reduces popping, rapidly occurring sounds. Unfortunately, spatial hearing is not very effective. While the hearing aids can focus forward, this does not help when trying to determine from which direction a car is approaching or where someone is calling from. With 10 frequency bands, we are not entirely satisfied with the CIC, but it should suffice for uncomplicated hearing profiles. The sound is likely not to be completely natural with this setup.

An exciting topic in audiology is the use of artificial intelligence, but this is not yet implemented in this Oticon model.

Rating Hearing comfort: 4,2

Operation & connectivity

“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when choosing a hearing aid, which is why we will take a look at the operating and connection options. A very quick way to adjust the volume is the small button on the device. It is easy to feel, and you can increase or decrease the volume in several steps. Additional programs for specific listening situations can also be activated this way. If you prefer to skip the button, you can simply have it deactivated. We would have liked to have a remote control, but Oticon does not offer one for this model. So no points in this area.

Voice commands are a rather new method of operating hearing aids. However, this model does not have that option yet. That’s not a big deal - as long as you can hear well. Another option for controlling the hearing aids is a tap control. You simply tap your fingers on your ear, which triggers a specific function. But this option is not available in this Oticon device.

We missed an app for the Jet 1 CIC during the test. If operating via smartphone is important to you, you should look for another model. Unfortunately, wireless connection options are completely lacking in this version. That’s not very up-to-date, but it is probably due to the small size of the hearing aid.

The best alternatives to the Jet 1 CIC

Simplicity & security

Another point on our checklist is handling. Does everything work easily and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe use in everyday life? When it comes to relaxed listening, the Jet 1 CIC is only easy when you are mainly in quiet listening environments. If it gets louder or more challenging, we do not receive any support from adaptive situational automatics. At best, one can only assist with manual control options. The adjustment to the new hearing sensation is supported by this device with a fully automatic acclimatization manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I don’t have to do anything other than wear my hearing aids regularly.

The Jet 1 CIC is not rechargeable. It continues to get its power from size 10 disposable batteries, which need to be changed every few days.

We also take a look at the robustness of the casing and discover the protection class IP 68 in the data sheet. This means that dust cannot penetrate at all, and water only becomes hazardous after prolonged submersion. Protection against contact is also included.

Rating Simplicity & security: 3,0

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find some here: Oticon has integrated a sound generator that plays some soothing sounds for those suffering from tinnitus. This can help distract from the tinnitus and provide a bit more relaxation.

Online services are becoming increasingly commonplace. There is often a remote maintenance service available for hearing aids. However, Oticon has not yet provided this for its Jet 1 CIC. This means you have to go to the specialty store every time you want to have your hearing aid reprogrammed. No extra points for that.

Tracking health data is a real benefit of modern hearing aids. However, this Oticon model lacks the sensors for this service. The device from Oticon focuses on essential hearing functions and does not offer extras like voice assistants or translation features. While it would have been fun, it is not necessary for a good hearing experience.

Rating Extras: 3,3

Conclusion: Oticon Jet 1 CIC

In the overall result, this test device finishes in the lower rankings and lacks some features. We award a score of 4.37. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable; however, for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
