Oticon presents the Jet 1 mini Ex, a model from the basic class. It can compensate for mild to profound hearing losses. It is a hearing aid of very small size that provides good sound by placing the speaker directly in the ear canal. It is worn behind the ear.

Hearing comfort

The comfort of hearing determines whether someone enjoys wearing their hearing aids or not. Therefore, we first looked at how the hearing aid handles background noise. In this model, which Oticon presents to us, we found very few options for influencing comfort. Of course, noise suppression is integrated, designed to mitigate tiring background noises. The standard noise suppression is built into the Jet 1 mini Ex by the manufacturer. It is active in the background but cannot be further adjusted. There is also wind management, which we find very good, as many people enjoy spending time outdoors. The reduction of wind noise occurs at a medium level.

Quick, sharp sounds are detected here, but only moderately reduced. We have to forgo spatial hearing with the Jet 1 mini Ex, but at least the microphones can be switched to a focus mode. We also take a look at the number of equalizer bands: the device from Oticon features 10. We're not really happy with that; the possibilities for shaping the sound are rather limited. However, it is sufficient for good speech understanding.

Sometimes we encounter hearing aids that successfully process data using artificial intelligence, but this device does not yet offer that.

Operation & connectivity

Almost every one of us owns a smartphone, so the question arises whether it can also be connected to the new hearing aid. Let’s take a look at the connectivity and operability of the Jet 1 mini Ex. First of all, we discovered a button directly on the hearing aid. This is very practical, as it is the simplest and quickest way to make changes. The volume can be adjusted through it, and different hearing programs can also be activated. If someone prefers not to change anything directly at the ear, the button can, of course, be deactivated. We do like the small remote controls, and we have found one for this model. This allows for discreet adjustments to the volume or sound.

In our tests, we did not find any option for voice control. This feature is not necessarily required, but we would have appreciated it nonetheless. Some hearing aids can be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without needing to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.

An app for individual operation is available for free. However, we only find standard functions that are useful, but the app is not really enjoyable to use. Headphones are not needed anymore, as it has a wireless option and can transmit sounds from the smartphone directly into the ears – provided the smartphone is equipped with 2.4 GHz LE technology.

Simplicity & security

The user-friendliness is the next aspect we want to address. This is about everyday usability and the question of how easy and safe it is to navigate life with the hearing aid. The first points in the chapter on simplicity are not capitalized by the Jet 1 mini Ex, as it lacks automatic situational adaptation. We have to adjust it ourselves until we can manage in the respective hearing situation. The adaptation to the new hearing sensation is supported by this device with a fully automatic adaptation manager. It adjusts the amplification in barely noticeable steps until my hearing loss is completely compensated. I need to do nothing more than wear my hearing aids regularly.

The Jet 1 mini Ex is powered by zinc-air batteries. Changing the battery could become quite difficult for people with limited dexterity or vision. If you have concerns about this, you should consider looking for a rechargeable model.

The hearing aid has been classified into IP protection class 68. This guarantees comprehensive protection against the ingress of dust. Water also cannot easily damage the hearing aid. Thus, it is well-equipped for outdoor activities where it can get wet and dirty. However, do not go bathing or swimming with the hearing aids. Bath additives or the salt content in seawater can alter the composition and can ultimately cause damage.

Extras

Everyone appreciates a few extra features, so let's see if we can find any here: We were particularly impressed by the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by a ringing or buzzing in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Jet 1 mini Ex is essentially nothing more than a sound generator. Its purpose is to create broadband noises or sounds that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus is masked and is no longer perceived as bothersome.

Oticon is keeping up with the times and offers a future-oriented feature with the remote fitting service. Busy people with little time can contact their audiologist online and have their hearing aids reprogrammed. Hearing aid users who have a longer journey to the specialist store also benefit from this special service.

Many hearing aids still come with a few health features today. However, since the Jet 1 mini Ex does not have any special sensors for this, we cannot present any particular features here. Digital algorithms and suitable apps increasingly allow for the integration of lifestyle functions that support your daily life. We are impressed by what hearing aids like this one from Oticon can do today. Be sure to give it a try!
