The Oticon Jet 2 IIC in review

We tested a lightweight, barely visible and noticeable hearing aid from the basic class this time. It is the Oticon Jet 2 IIC. It is worn in the ear and is designed for mild, moderate, and stronger hearing needs. The discreet, very deep position in the ear canal is due to its construction, which is why it also delivers a nice, clear sound.
Hearing comfort
We all agree that speech understanding is the most important task of hearing aids. However, from our experience in the hearing acoustics specialty store, we also know that hearing comfort is at least equally important. It involves processing background noise in such a way that it does not hinder speech understanding while still creating a realistic sound image. During the test of the Jet 2 IIC, we found very few options for influencing comfort. Let's take a look at the individual features:
Of course, this Oticon device has noise suppression, as that has become standard. Noise suppression means that uniform and rather monotonous sounds (e.g., air conditioning, vacuum cleaner ...) are dampened. Here, there is only a minimal basic reduction. A certain tolerance for noise should be expected from the hearing aid user.
A impulse sound suppressor is unfortunately not included in the Jet 2 IIC. For windy situations outdoors, Oticon has provided a wind noise reduction feature. This is indeed useful and is simply part of a contemporary comfort setup. With 8 frequency bands, we are not entirely satisfied in the IIC, but it should be sufficient for uncomplicated hearing curves. The sound is probably not entirely natural with that. In the Jet 2 IIC, one does not need to reconstruct 3D hearing, as it remains completely intact. This is made possible by the deep seating in the ear canal.
Other hearing aids already use artificial intelligence in their signal processing, but this strategy is not yet present in the Jet 2 IIC.

Operation & connectivity
“Can I adjust something on my hearing aid myself?” “Is there perhaps an app?” These and similar questions are becoming increasingly important when selecting a hearing aid, so let's take a look at the control and connection options. We searched in vain for a button for quick access options. It has probably fallen victim to the small design. This is manageable, as most settings are adjusted automatically by the hearing aid anyway. Remote controls for hearing aids are actually common today, but Oticon has not provided one for this device.
For some time now, there has been a trend to adjust hearing aids louder or quieter using voice commands. The idea is really good, but Oticon is not yet there with this device. Don’t worry, this feature would be nice but is not essential. Some hearing aids can also be controlled with a quick tap of the finger, without the need to press a button. However, this feature has not yet been implemented here.
An app for individual control is available for free. However, we find only basic functions here that are useful, but the app is not really enjoyable to use. If you were looking forward to wireless streaming, we unfortunately have to disappoint you, as a wireless module has unfortunately not been integrated here.

Simplicity & security
Another point in our checklist is usability. Does everything work simply and reliably? What does the hearing aid offer to ensure safe application in everyday life? The first points in the chapter on simplicity are lacking in the Jet 2 IIC, as it does not have an automatic situation adjustment. We have to manually readjust until we can manage in the respective hearing situation. We give a big plus point for the automatic acclimatization assistant. It gradually increases the starting volume in very small steps until my hearing goal is reached. This makes it significantly easier to get used to the new sound.
Unfortunately, the Jet 2 IIC is not equipped with a battery, so regular size 10 batteries are needed for operation.
The Jet 2 is almost dust and waterproof and, with its IP 68 classification, is certainly well protected against external influences.

Extras
Before we come to the end, let's take a look at the extras: We really liked the optional tinnitus program. There are quite a few people who are occasionally or frequently plagued by ringing or humming in their ears. The tinnitus program in the Jet 2 IIC is essentially just a sound generator. It aims to create broad-band sounds or tones that gently and pleasantly stimulate all areas of hearing. The tinnitus is masked and is no longer perceived as disturbing.
In these mobile times, a remote maintenance service via an app would be very helpful. This would allow one to conveniently create a new hearing aid program from home. Unfortunately, this service is not available for the Jet 2 IIC. So, for changes, one still has to visit the specialized store.
A new trend in the hearing aid industry is integrated sensors that can track some personal health data. However, the Jet 2 IIC does not offer this. The hearing aid does without additional functions such as special assistance systems, a fall alarm, or language translators. This is not a problem, as it does not affect the important hearing functions.

In the overall result, this test device ranks towards the back and lacks some features. We give it a score of 4.29. For less demanding listeners, this is acceptable, but for a very active lifestyle, we recommend a hearing aid with more extensive comfort features.
